I really think the manufacturer listened to the feedback and have just about perfected this beautiful chess set. The detail in the pieces is amazing for this price point. The board is beautiful too and the lettering and numbers are done with care and there are no issues with legibility. I love this set, easily a great gift or set to pass on to a loved one.

Well it arived free shipping via Amazon Delivery in about 4 business days. The picture on Amazon does the set a great unjustice. The chess cabinet and pieces were of very good quality and craftsmanship especially for the price. I immediately ordered two more sets for my married children's families for XMAS gifts. I am building them chess boards with a one inch thick Teac Wood Base, Red Oak Frame, and Walnut and White Ash 1-3/4 inch squares, and the base of these pieces fits very nicely in those squares with room to spare. The pieces also fit within the 1-5/8 inch squares on my other chess board and was ok on my other board withhh 1-1/2 inch squares. The only obvious concern deals with using it as a traveling set, the wood case is a bit much and a bag would be more suitable for carrying a travelling board, clock, and chess pieces in one of those Staunton canvas travel bags with a scorebook etc..., the wood box will not fit. In my case, the boards I am building are not meant for traveling either.

I purchased 5 of these chess sets fot the 5 boards I made, but bought the green and burgundy corderouy house of Staunton bags via Amazon for the pieces because they made it easy to transport in the house of Staunton chessboard travel bags. These are very fine pieces that are just as good as my sets that cost $150+, except no extra queens nor are they available from this manufacturer nor would they fit in the box case. I bought smaller height extra queens from three trees workshop for $12 per pair. My recommendation to the manufacturer is to make and provide extra queens with a $12 cost increase.

I bought 2 of these recently because after I bought the first one the next day they had a better offer and faster shipping time (1-day shipping I believe). I tried to cancel the previous one but unable to do so. So glad the cancellation did not go through, because the first one arrived came in perfect condition with superb quality and craftmanship. It can be passed down to your kids. It smells a little bit when you open the box, but the smell dissipates after few hours. The pieces are somewhat lightweight but has some weight to it.
The second one, not so much. The queen was in terrible condition, 2 of the beads on her crown fell off and the felts on the bottom were not put right in the center in most of the pieces.
I know I will eventually have to return one of them, but since there’s so much different in the quality, it’s so easy to choose which one needs to go back.
Just want to put this to everyone’s attention that you may have to order 2 since you may get a defective one
I still give 5 stars because I concentrated on the good one.

The pieces and board are quite aesthetically pleasing. However, I was disappointed to find when I began removing the pieces that either they were not weighted as advertised, or, perhaps, were weighted so insufficiently that I could not tell the difference. If these had been properly weighted, I would not hesitate giving this a 5-star rating, but the lack of weight was too big of a spoiler for me -- not something that can easily be resolved.

First, I saw reviews about not having the cloverleaf design on the board; mine did.

This is a combination of unique hand crafted feel, but also a little that reminds you why it's relatively inexpensive.

The good: The board is really pretty, the letter and numbers help young people (or anyone new to the game ) learn the "names" of the squares so that they can follow along in a chess book, and the wooden pieces have a hand carved feel. The design with the foldable board with the pieces fitting inside is convenient,

The bad: one of the knights came with the felt bottom not attached (looks like it could be easily glued back) and the pieces easily fall out of their storage spots after they are put away (which just means a lot of them will be loose when you open the board.)

All said though, a nice set for the money.

I am delighted to write that this Wegiel handmade chess set is simply beautiful. It is made with outstanding workmanship and the size is perfect, 16 x16 with the pieces stored inside. They really do not roll all over the place when inside as some reviewers have said but are just fine and all the lovely adornments on the pieces are all intact and they have a lovely weight. They are not weighted with anything but their own wood and there is a felt bottom which is perfectly placed on the bottom of each piece. Some say it has an odour, well the only thing it smells like is good wood, which I love. Perhaps some people are so used to the smell of plastic in our environment that they forget what wood smells like! Another thing I was concerned with was whether the seam in the center would be aligned when it is flat for playing ......YES it is absolutely perfectly aligned and flat! I have nothing to gain from writing this review other than I read alot of reviews myself before making a purchase and I find them of utmost importance in making a decision on one item versus another. I actually paid more for this chess set because I wanted it ASAP as I could have purchased it elsewhere for less but not have had it until April. The "Senator" set is almost identical, mine does have the clover leaf pattern burnt into the dark squares which I find charming. Also the letters are not childlike but simply done by hand versus a stencil, again a charming touch.
I highly recommend this chess set to everyone!! Enjoy the game of chess on a handmade work of art!

My set arrived with all the pieces secure in their fitted cabinet (folded Chess board) and I like the excellent quality. The pieces are very tactile, and weighted 'just right' for me. The King and Queen are superbly crafted, and I would say the same for the Knights. really beautifully made, and the Rooks are as good as most and better than many. So why 4 stars. I bought a small boxed set for under £9, see my review 5*, but the pieces need a little finishing, I castellated the top of the Rooks, and made a cut in the Bishops 'head', under £9 mind you. This set is everything I have stated but the Bishops had no 'cut' in their head just smooth, doesn't look or feel right. I have made the cut, very hard good wood. Used a Dremel fine cutting wheel. I love the set, but to leave the Bishop unfinished...NO.

Nice looking. The box and pieces are well made. It's a lot bigger than I expected so not that great for travel. My only criticism would be that the inserts that hold the pieces are flimsy and feel cheap. They also don't really hold the pieces securely. I will probably replace them with foam cut to fit. Altogether though, this is a good value set that is playable and also looks nice as a display piece when you aren't playing.

Bigger than I expected, but I do like the size. Big, chunky, well carved pieces, very nice finish on the board.

The metal clasp that holds the folded board together isn't the best. It's small and made from thin metal; quite difficult to close and will dig into your fingers.

The pieces are held on the inside of the board inside low quality, thin, vacuum moulded plastic that feels cheap.

The pins could be made in better finish, but for the price you pay, you can accept it, hence why just 4 stars.
