Editorial Reviews
From PARK Chan-wook, the celebrated director of OLDBOY, LADY VENGEANCE and STOKER, comes a ravishing new crime drama. PARK presents a gripping and sensual tale of two women - a young Japanese Lady living on a secluded estate, and a Korean woman who is hired to serve as her new handmaiden, but is secretly plotting with a conman to defraud her of a large inheritance. Inspired by the novel Fingersmith by British author Sarah Waters, THE HANDMAIDEN borrows the most dynamic elements of its source material and combines it with PARK Chan-wook’s singular vision to create an unforgettable viewing experience.

This may have had great dramatic moments, but there was way too much sex in it. It wasn't even soft-core porn. This crap rivaled HARDcore porn at times. And for all the people calling it art, if the sex scenes weren't there at all, I hardly believe that this film would have such rave reviews. Two whores on display, now good for nothing but more of the same. This crap is the scourge that is damning the very core of humanity. What belongs in the bedroom (or kitchen table, backseat, etc.) should STAY there and it does not belong in film. Sex made this film. All else is forgettable.

People who are giving this movie a one star rating need to stick with mainstream genres and not venture into dark underworlds. This movie was fantastic and a must see for anyone who enjoys a director taking you through a journey that will shock you, disturb you, make you laugh at times and generally leave you intrigued. The plot moves in a back and forth narrative taking you through one person's journey as they think things are taking place and then returns to the beginning to show the unexpected truth. The story is about the manipulation and oppression of women in a strong male dominated culture during the Korean occupation of Japan. The two main female characters are subjected to trickery that ultimately they use in their own way. There is strong adult sexual content that is very Asian culture based without which the movie would not reach it's fullest potential. There are no cutting corners with a story like this. If you can't stomach lesbianism and what would be considered perversion, then don't watch this movie. The acting was excellent, the story line tight and the filmography fantastic!

Movie is fantastic, watch it asap. This review is primarily for this US Blu-ray release.
Be warned that there is a bit of a controversy regarding the subtitles on this release. Due to the fact that both Korean and Japanese are spoken throughout the entirety of the film, in the theatrical release these two different languages were differentiated by the use of color. Korean was in White and Japanese in yellow. This is important because at some points in the film it is important to know what language is being spoken (at least for those of use that only speak English). For whatever asinine reason, Sony and Mongrel Media have decided to completely get rid of any indication as to what language is being spoken.
For those wanting the color coded subtitles present in the original theatrical US release check out the Canadian Blu-ray. It's Region A, has colored subtitles, and even sports slightly better picture quality.

'The Handmaiden' is a visually sumptuous, extremely sexy film that is perhaps best watched on a full stomach, while sipping an aromatic and robust glass of red wine. It is a three-parts-in-one, "who is deceiving who?" pictorial stunner that I can best equate to a twisting kaleidoscope of intrigue, deception, and love. As a huge lover of foreign language films, I loved watching this visually rich, Korean cinematic treat. Be forewarned however: it is not for the prudish, or for those who prefer fast-paced dramas. 'The Handmaiden' is complex, and requires your full attention while watching it, so as not to miss one bit of revelation. If you are a film lover who appreciates films for their artistry, their cinematography, and for their art-direction, this film will definitely be a reward for your senses.
The plot will be a bit difficult and confusing to explain without giving key points away. Key points that are entirely more delicious when discovered naturally, as the film plays out shocking scene after shocking scene. It is a great example of masterful storytelling and it’s twisting duplicity keeps you engaged up until the very satisfying end. The circuitous, titillating plot left me wondering to know who is deceiving who and why. When I eventually found out, it was not entirely surprising, but wholly gratifying.
Although there was never a boring or dull moment on screen, some scenes and plot points were long-winded and perhaps carried on for far too long. However, as I watched, I eventually learned all of it was necessary and essential. Films such as these are a true passion project for all those involved in its making. The cinematic results prove that the director, the actors, the screenwriter and all those involved in its making, unquestionably love what they do and are very good at it. A solid 4.5 out of 5 and I highly recommend it.

This film left me thinking about it for days. It’s one of those films that has sparked much debate on whether it is or isn’t just in the “male gaze problem” and I couldn’t decide which argument I agreed with. Ultimately, I can see why someone might think that the destruction of the “male filth” in the angry book destruction scene would lose its meaning to some viewers when, ultimately, the movie ends up having scenes that seem to be inspired by male fantasies of lesbian relations. But I can also see how the lesbian scenes aren’t meant to be “for” men or through a male lens, but instead, an exploration of female desire separated from men. Ultimately, I loved the film just for causing so much debate. If everyone agreed on its effectiveness or ineffectiveness for executing a particular controversial subject than it wouldn’t have made me (and I’m sure, many others) really think about it. I would have given it 5 stars but there is a part of me that still thinks that these sex scenes could have been done a little better. Not just because they looked and felt like something you’d find on a porn website, but because the “exploration of female sexuality” that is very clearly being stressed here could have been a little more messy and sensual and passionate and not as clean as tidy as a scripted porno scene.

Brilliant intrigue

Absolutely brilliant. A three parter that has the unwary going from one assumption to another, and the final outcome is little short of brilliant. How this has slipped through must only be because of the fact it is not English language. A disgusting fact if ever l met one.

Intelligent, sexy, mysterious, emotional, surprising but above aethetically beautiful, this film is wonderfully suited to viewers who appreciate high quality in the cinema. I shall give no spoilers, as an important part of it's charm is how it keeps the viewer guessing all the way. Loved it.

I didnt care for the BBC version of the book [far too twee and Dickensian ] but this is a classic ; odd , dark , erotic , complicated , visually beautiful , unfolding surprises with tricks and twists and something hidden in the basement which is far from nice.

A very good Japanese/Korean film

A very good Japanese/Korean film. Very interesting plot line which is unexpected from the trailer (no spoilers) but is much more sexy than it lets on! Perhaps do not watch with the family as I planned to. I loved how the film is split into two parts to tell the story from both perspectives.

Enjoyed the film which was split into three sections. It had a good twist to it. There was some erotic bits but nothing overly sexual.
