I acquired the 1st part of this thrilling selection long ago around 1959, as a mono vinyl lp record. Now at last I have the stereo version, on cd, with a selection of marches from another lp. Frederick Fennell's many Eastman Wind Ensemble recordings from that era are a very special group all of their own. If one particular march had to represent this particular collection, I'd choose "Old Comrades", but all are equally top notch in their magnificent performances!

There are noticeable variances in the sound levels in the CD I got, and the percussion section is at times overwhelmingly loud. I know Fennell was a drummer but it's hard to believe he would allow this. Yet, he was a master conductor of marches and maybe it was deliberatel. The band lacks the translucency of the Screamers album. Whether it's in the transfer process or not I just don't know.

This album is fantastic to do your house work . You just march from one chore to another . It is a great album for several of our holidays. I can't tell you how much this album helps me to get my walking done . Just turn on your ipod and step on out.

I could't offer a technical critique of this c.d,instead I'll attempt to describe the enjoyment it gave me.Imagine you're sitting in your car listening to the radio, not terribly enthusiastic about getting out to start work. You become aware there's a bright ,cheerful sounding tune being played-vaguely familiar,I find myself tapping out the beat and humming along-what's this called then? Then we get to the part I can identify-DAH-DAHdeDAHdeDAH-DAH-DAH-Oh,of course,it's the music they used in "The Hunters",oh the memories that brought back. That tune got me out of the car ,through the day's turmoil, and when I woke up the next morning at 3a.m.,it was still going throgh my head!Okay, log onto Amazon, click, click, all I've gotta do now is contain my impatience .The C.D. duly arrived, suffice it to say it exceeded all my expectations regarding quality and content and has become one of my favourites.
