Having already become a fan with the first book in the series, I went into Hands of Onyx with a little knowledge about the quirky band of cybernetic soldiers known as the Sav'ine. Once again Stacy Bender creates an evocative and interesting band of outsiders that delight the senses of even the most jaded sci-fi fans. One thing I find truly impressive about her writing is that she never seems to run out of ideas for great new characters and cyborg types for this series. I was dubious that this book could come up with the same variety in the main cast as the previous one but I was not disappointed in the least.
I also loved that much of the story is told from the unenlightened perspective of the hapless freighter captain. It helped maintain the air of mystery about the Guard even for previous readers. This one definitely kept me on the edge of my seat, just waiting for more. The climax when it comes was nail biting till almost the very last page. Stacy Bender is a true master of her craft. Every book is a new sensation, borrowing just a little from the one before it, before spinning off in unexpected directions.
A great thing about this series is that they can be enjoyed in any order so don't despair if you haven't read the first one. You'll still have no trouble at all getting into the story. Highly recommended tale of adventure in the furthest reaches not only of space, but also the human heart.
So many things to love about this book. First off I have to praise Bender for borrowing a page from the book of Lucas to incorporate contemporary relatable personality types and traits into an otherwise alien universe. The main character love chocolate, in fact she just might kill for it given the right mood. Her team is both diverse and crazy and that just makes them all the more lovable.
Aris is a potential romantic interest for the heroine but he is completely human and how could he ever come to love someone whose body is 90% cybernetic? Add a rapid fire pace and a series of calamities that never seem to end and you have a book that is all but impossible to put down once you start it.
A can't miss entry in the Sav'ine series.
