Norman Herr (Ph.D., University of California, Los Angeles) is associate professor of science and computer education at California State University, Northridge and served as Chair of the Science Department in a California High School. He has also worked as a chemist, community college science instructor, for the College Board, and has written many science education articles.

This book is packed with dozens of demonstrations and lab activities for every physics concept taught in the upper grades 7-12. Can be used to supplement the textbook or on its own. Each section (Ex: Electricity) has a brief 1-2 page overview, followed by real life examples and activities to understand the concepts. Excellent for "stepping-up" a very basic physical science text. Illustrations and reproducible worksheets.

I bought this as a source for ideas for hands-on activities for my homeschool co-op class. The explanations are straight-forward and the activities are easily created with found objects and home supplies.

My only caution is that you need to have an understanding of the mathematics of physics first. This may not be enough of a text to stand on its own for a non-science, non-math person.

I had been teaching maths for a couple of years and then asked to teach physics. I had very little background in physics, or any science subjects for that matter. But this text was fantastic as a bank of resources for some beginning ideas.

Each topic begins with an overview on how it is used in the real world, giving you some great introductory discussions you can have with students to get them engaged. Each prac that follows is explained in detail and also has solutions on what should have happened as well as why at the end of each topic. As someone with such little physics knowledge, the explanations included were very clear and helped me solidify my own knowledge of the content before attempting it in class.

However, these pracs aren't well designed to be photocopied and given straight to students. They aren't written up nicely like pre-made worksheets. So some work would be needed to make use of the activities for students.

In short: a great resource if you are a bit lost and need some basic ideas of how to start.

I first got this book while student teaching, and taught by the author, Norman Herr. A most excellent teacher. His book is quite useful and highly recommended for any physics teacher.
