I believe that these were washed in warm water and dried on delicate, at least for the first year or so. Since my body changes size and shape frequently, I can't say for sure, but I'm almost certain they shrank a little. I have various sizes of Hanes Comfort Soft underwear, and, as I said, various styles, so I can't say for *sure* whether they all shrank, but I can't see why they would differ. I don't recall noticing any difference in fabric content among the various packages.
Now I weigh in the low 120's (5'1"), and most or all of my Hanes panties are a couple of years old and have been washed many, many times. Even with the probable shrinkage and the weight gain, I can still put on the size 5 (hipsters*, I think), but they are a little too tight for comfort. The size 6 (preferably briefs*, I think) are more comfortable. *The briefs and hipsters look a lot alike, and I don't tend to think about which one I'm wearing at a given time, especially after I've finished dressing. I believe that the low-rise briefs come up higher than the hipsters, so might be less appropriate under even slightly low-rise pants. Not a real problem for me since I wear my tops over my waistband, but underwear coming up higher than pants bothers me on principle, even if it's not apparent when I'm fully dressed.
Some of the Hanes Comfort Soft (don't know whether they were briefs or hipsters) developed wear around the waistband, probably after a couple of years and numerous washings, and even outright holes right under the waistband. However, I really think I've gotten my money's worth out of them. I threw a couple of the holey ones out since I have plenty of others. I will wait to replace them until I decide whether I'm going to be a size 5 or size 6, and whether I'm going to be a briefs girl or a hipster girl.
Again, not distinguishing by style or size here: nearly all the packages I got were in assorted colors and patterns, and, since I ordered most of them on the Internet, I didn't have any choice (I think DH got some of them at Target). I think I got one or two pairs in dark brown and threw them out on principle. I don't know which style those were. I don't know why they insisted on all the colors and patterns; it's not as though they look terrific, especially after lots of washing. White would be fine.
I also tried one package of Hanes briefs with exposed elastic in the waistband, and much prefer the Comfort Soft waistbands.
While there's an elastic waist it's enclosed in cotton/spandex fabric: Scroll over the photo to look closely.
I hope they never stop making these!
I got two whites and a pink in one pack, and some purple/blue prints in the other, none of which I loved or hated. Since Walmart has consistently been out of my size, and I like this cut, it was worth it to me to take a chance buying these online. I would probably do it again.
If you have generous thighs, or care about what color underwear you get, order with hesitation.
