Very frugal budget. Interesting concept of random strangers who meet in a chat room and plan a group suicide. I liked the plot twist when it was discovered that one of the members of the group had a very different agenda. It was obvious early on that one can be whoever one wants to be in cyberspace. I suspect the original screenplay did a much better job of character development - which suffered on the editing room floor.

The film opens with some obscure tarot card flashes and shooting for all of our background information. An on-line forum group opt for a suicide pact, but want to do it all together and by rules. Once they get together they are more concerned about being comfortable than offing themselves. Everyone waits for the person who calls himself Dwarfstar to begin.

You can tell the group has issues as facts slowly ooze out. Their reasons for killing themselves are exposed.

This is an interesting thriller with a twist or mystery. It is not a horror film. Robbyn Leigh provides the token eye candy.

Not for everyone. Part of a 30 Horror film collection. The hanged man in tarot cards is surrendering to a higher authority or greater good.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs. N-word. No nudity. Implied sex, rape.

THE HANGED MAN concerns a group of chat room enthusiasts who decide to meet in real life, in order to commit mass suicide. However, the plan goes south when a sheriff shows up to check things out. Events occur that could be hallucinatory, supernatural, or a combination thereof. I must confess to being confused, and in the dark, right up to the end! This may sound like a negative, but actually, I was surprised and satisfied by the final revelation. Of course, it's not perfect. It does have its clunky / dull moments. Still, I like the sum of its parts. This is more of an unsettling mystery than a horror movie, or even a true thriller. If you're looking for something different, then THM definitely fits that description...

IMHO an excellent contemporary ghost story scripted in a very classic style.
A superb job of setting the premise within an internet chat room and the truths and deceptions that are revealed when the participants meet face to face.
it's fairly easy to figure out who "darkstar" is as it is to read their personalities and realize that nobody will actually follow through with the plan of following through with the suicide pact.

The conclusion to the story is superbly crafted and eerie; the psychological impact is impressive and long ignored techniques in drafting a horror story of this nature are deftly applied here to provide maximum effect.

The only disappointment is the careless and insignificant allusions to the Tarot which is diminished to a mere visual gimmick rather than being effectively used as a catalyst for the plot. Other than that, this script offers glimpses into the human psyche that are the building blocks to the growing sense of dread that culminates in a spine chilling surprise conclusion.

The Hanged Man
This movie showed a lot of promise during the first half hour or so, but then the story just ran off the rails and went nowhere. This of course was not do to the acting; which was quite good, but rather the writing. In fact after getting through this feature I had to check out what was next for the actors/actresses just out of curiosity. The story on the other hand was full of logic holes and drifted from the main story often of enough to distract from what little conflict the tale had.
The film was shot well, but what little special effects the movie had did not hold up to footage and was mostly just playing with image controls in post.
I would be hard pressed to present this film as a horror flick as in my opinion the genre would be more of psychological thriller without the thrill.
My recommendation; pass this one up.

People meet over a chat line. This is not very unique as people will do that. However this group forms a suicide pack lead by a mysterious chatterer named Dwarf Star.

They meet one at a time at a creepy old barn in the middle of nowhere, waiting for Dwarf Star to arrive. Things begin to happen as we hear creepy background music and each character start to unfold this/her secrets.

Immediately we think of classic stories like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"; there are cheesy flash backs or forwards or sideward to support the theme that this is a dream. Please do not make it a cheap knockoff of "The Eye" or some other cheep ghost story. Tell me it is a psychological thriller or something less sinister.

Could not watch the whole movie. It's very boring and the acting is pretty bad. It's below a B Movie, Sorry. I certainly would not pay money to see it.

A few very talented stand-outs amongst this group of actors, some of whom should have more roles (most notable the cowboy, the main lead, and both the black actors), who unfortunately are placed in a quirky storyline with anemic vision.
