This was an extremely wonderful book and it kept my full attention. This is a must read...
On his life changing journey from an insecure boy to a confident warrior, the narrator carried with him one constant: an image of a girl from his high school homeroom, a girl he had cherished only from a distance. Throughout the hardships of his field ops and duties on military bases and overseas deployments, the memory of the girl was often evoked as inspiration and as a spiritual buffer by the marine, especially at his darkest times. Some years after his enlistment ends, the marine encounters the girl again, this time as a man comfortable in his own skin and unafraid to initiate a friendship that then develops into an enduring bond.
'Hanging the artificial sun' is military jargon for firing an illumination round into the air, to provide visibility in the dark in a particular area for marines engaged in combat. This is a task that the narrator frequently performed as an artillery marine. In a metaphorical sense, this book shines a light - for the reader - on some of the extraordinary life experiences in the US Marine Corps and shows how serving in the Corps enabled the narrator to become the man he wanted to be.
