Editorial Reviews

"Author Michael Phillip Cash accomplishes a lot in only ninety one pages.  He parallels three generations of stories dealing with family issues, rebellion, sexuality, hypocrisy, deceit, prejudice, and finally acceptance. This is all achieved without sacrificing character or imagery." JD Jung, Underrated Reads
"Don't let the length of this novella fool you. Michael Phillip Cash is able to pack a big punch into a short amount of pages.  Successfully blending tragic stories of the five spirits...Cash does not disappoint."Deanna, The Book Lover's Attic
"A short but mesmerizing tale, this spine tingling test of the human spirit quite literally takes on the ghosts of our ancestors in an attempt to neutralize their mistakes." - ForeWord Review
"This fast paced novella, easily read in one sitting, spins a tale of woe dating back to 1649, when a woman wrongly accused of witchcraft curses the reverend who sentenced her to death. As the years roll by, a number of his descendants fall victim to the curse and find themselves inhabitants of the hanging tree. The story's greatest strengths are its pacing and structure: Each short chapter develops an individual victim's back story piece by piece, leaving readers in constant, eager anticipation..." - Kirkus Reviews
"... readers looking for a quick and engaging read will devour this story..." - Bianca Schulz
"History enthusiasts as well as readers who thirst for authenticity, will appreciate the different time periods..." - Lemon Bee Blogspot

In a break from his full size novels, Michael Phillip Cash has done it again with a new novella that he has just released this week. The short story called, The Hanging Tree is everything you would expect from a thriller writer. Intrigue, mystery, ghostly presence, it's all there.

The story begins to unfolds in present time with two young teens, Arielle and Chad, who are making out under an old tree dubbed, "the hanging tree". Chad is pushing Arielle in a direction that she may not want to go and it is now a make it or break it decision.

Intertwined within, are five spirits from the past who are watching the whole thing unfold. They begin to tell their tragic tales of being at this very same tree and what it meant for them. Their stories are eerily familiar and all their deaths are based on a curse that be felled them.

Can this curse be broken in time so no harm comes to Arielle or Chad?

Ah, but if I told you, my dear readers, then that would give away the twisted makings of this tale.

I read this in about an hour and half to two hours. It really is packed full of imagery considering the shortness of the book. It's well worth the time and just perfect for the Halloween season upon us.

An easy 5 stars here!

I've read a couple of Michael Phillip Cash's books and enjoyed the haunted tales. This is not one of my favorite stories by Cash. I would describe this as YA and if one follows my reviews one will know I'm not a big fan of YA. I've nothing really personal against YA but I'm probably a bit old for YA. I said PROBABLY. (Don't go getting ideas and making me out to be old and frumpy!!) Okay. So this isn't about me. Moving right along...

This novella appears to be about choices and sacrifices. A young girl named Arielle wrestles with her sexuality. She planned to go all the way with her boyfriend, Chad, someone her father disapproves of. What right did her father have? Her parents marriage has failed. Arielle's mother has abandoned her and run off with another man. Her father was preoccupied with a girlfriend of his own. Arielle had been very close to her dad. But now, his attention was elsewhere. Arielle feels ignored. Having sex with Chad was her way of striking back and proving that she could make her own choices. After all, her parents had made choices, the wrong choice, and they hadn't even asked Arielle how she felt. Yes! She had made her choice and now she would give it all away to Chad.

Arielle and Chad are kissing under an old, large oak tree. They are not alone. Displaced spirits reside on the branches above and they are watching events unfold between the two teenagers. When Arielle realizes that she is not prepared for Chad's advances, Chad begins to force himself on the girl. The spirits decide to intervene. The sad spirits cannot allow the innocent young girl to experience the pain and sorrow they know all to well. But there is a curse in place. It is an old curse that has plagued the Harmond family for centuries. An angry witch cast the spell long ago.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was short but I was packed full of in depth story telling. There was so many aspects of the story and each more intense and different from the other. I love how everything came together. Each charterer has a story of their own and each has their own run in with the curse. I really loved Goody as a character, she has spunk! She was my favorite part of the story. So much of it was wrapped around Goody. She has such a great personality, she tells it like it is and isn't afraid to speak the truth no matter what the consequences. The consequences are great but she handles is with dignity. The others look up to her for guidance, Especially Clair. The others, even though they may not want to admit it, look up to her as well.
I have come to love the Authors notes as much as the books. I have read a few books by this author and each has its own historical history. I love that! When I finish and an overwhelming flood of emotions hit me as I flip that last page and see “The End” , I always perk up when I see the Authors note. Now I have more insight on how the story came to be and what landmark in history it surrounds. With each book I have read so far there is a place you can visit that has the elements of the story. In this case its a legend and its remarkable.
This story is a must read! And a great price! I will defiantly be recommending this book to friends and family.

I've always enjoy reading paranormal books about spirits and witches and the like. This particular novella wove from modern day back to the time when witches were still hung to die.
It had an okay story line, typical teen characters dealing with rebelling from their families, sex, and immaturity. (Both in modern day time as well as the past.)
This book revolves around a curse that continues on from one generation to the next, until someone does something surprisingly different to finally break it.
How are Arielle and her boyfriend Chad connected to all of the spirits that linger around the infamous hanging tree?
How will her final decisions affect their fates in the end?

This story was a lot shorter than the other books that I've read by Cash. It's also not as thrilling or intriguing as the others. I liked it, but I do wish that the story was longer. I wish that there was more about the history of each spirit. I just feel that the story is lacking in details about each of the characters' background stories. Something missing--to me the story feels a bit unfinished. It does have the potential to be a really good book if there was more of a back story to each character. I also wish it was a bit more scary...but that's just me, since I love scary stories!
Michael Phillip Cash is a great writer so I think that if he decided to go back and add on to the story, it could be a big hit.
Worth a read, though!
