The story is character driven, but the plot offers a few unexpected twists and a surprise ending.
The book is a quick read. Some of the cockney slang may mystify American readers, but the meaning is usually clear from the context.
The story is set in 1987, a time when DNA evidence was only beginning to find its way in the mainstream of police investigations and detectives needed to rely upon old-fashioned techniques such as interrogations, stake-outs and deduction.
The book starts with a great first chapter that sets the scene both in tone and content for the rest of the book. You will never look at shuffling old ladies in the same way again. Using a style that switches easily and engagingly between two voices - the author and a private detective, Morris 'Moggsy' Shannon - this book is a realistic, gritty, page turner. Short effective chapters drive the story along and when the down to earth Shannon is enlisted to help turn horrific crimes into a tabloid tale by enigmatic investigative reporter Tommy Brand, things become very interesting.
If you like crime writing you will love this trawl through the seedy world of sex, death and politics in the crime soaked town of Crossley.
The author switched between characters in this book so we not only read as the mind of Moggsy or Detective Shannon, but the minds of criminals and suspects also. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was interested in what the Hangman symbolised in the story as well as curious to know who was behind the crimes this time in The Penny Detective 8. The culprit remained anonymous for most of the tale, and there was a surprise twist at the end as the person who was behind everything was not who I thought it was. There was never a dull moment in this story and I am hoping to read more!
In this tale, our two laidback detectives are earning themselves a few quid revealing local corruption and exploitation, which leads to cold-blooded murder, while at the same time trying to resolve the mystery of the cryptic “hangman” notes left behind at murder scenes by the Dark Angel. It’s a fast-moving, unpredictable page turner and I have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone who has read other books in this series or to those who simply enjoy a good read.
It is a " difficult to put down " book. The characters are now so familiar. Lovely to have Shannon's imput.
It would be good to visit " The Old One Hundred " !
A jolly good twist at the end. It is a" Must Read" !
