The HI 991401 pH/Temperature meter is a waterproof device designed specifically for measuring pH and temperature in hydroponics, and agricultural applications.
Featuring a large easy-to-read LCD screen, automatic temperature compensation, and automatic calibration (at one or two points with two sets of memorized buffers), the tester provides fast and accurate pH and temperature readings. The HI 991401 also features a non-clogging pH electrode which was designed specifically to work in fertilizer solutions with high concentrations of phosphate and nitrate. A hold function allows the user to freeze the display to record results.
The HI 991401 tester measures temperatures of 0.0 to 60.0 degrees C (32 to 140 degrees F) + or - 0.5 degrees C (+ or - 1 degrees F)/RH max 95% (+ or - 0.1 degrees C /0.1 degrees F), and has a range of 0.0 to 14.0 pH (+ or - 0.1) with a resolution of 0.1 pH. Power is supplied through a 12-Vdc power adapter and the device has an input impedance of 1E12 Ohm. At 160 x 105 x 31 mm (6.3 x 4.1 x 1.2") and 190 g (6.7 oz.), the 991401 provides a conveniently sized meter for taking measurements in the field.
pH testers measure the acidity or alkalinity of a substance and are commonly used by researchers, manufacturers, and hobbyists.
Hanna Instruments manufactures a wide variety of analytical instrumentation, including pH meters, multi-parameter meters, electrodes, chemical reagents, and buffer solutions. Founded in 1978, Hanna is headquartered in Woonsocket, RI, with subsidiaries in 32 countries. Hanna Instruments holds many firsts in the field of analytical instrumentation, including a pH electrode with a built-in temperature sensor, an electronic pocket-sized pH tester, and a replaceable electrode pH pocket tester. The reef tank is probably just as harsh, if not harsher of an environment, as someone using this for hydroponic growing. That being said, there was on review that I read, where they stated they liked the meter, but thought the ph probe was junk and did not last very long. I could be wrong, but perhaps their problem was that they did not realize that where the wire enters the probe, both ph and the temp probe, is not waterproof. The probes were designed to screw into a pipe or something, so under those conditions they would not be exposed to any water or fertilizer. My probes have to sit in the filter/sump of my tank so they occasionally do get exposed to salt water where they should not. Because of my particular arrangement of the probes, I had to use some silicone caulk to make a seal where the wire enters the probes. I would also like to add that when I first got this meter, I had some questions about it's operation, and called Hanna tech support.
I got someone's voicemail and left a message, and they called me back within minutes. He gave me very useful information and was willing to send me a new probe if I felt there was a problem. That never needed to happen since the problem was on my end. The unit is easy to read with the backlit display, shows ph and temperature at the same time, and comes at a good price. The only downfall of this meter is that the ph probe uses a non standard connector, instead of the BNC connector found on most ph probes, so at the cost of a replacement probe, you might as well buy a whole new meter.Read more ›
I left mine with the pH and temperature probes 24/7 in a hydro reservoir and the calibration remained stable enough over months. The temperature sensor is a plus and provides automatic compensation to the meter. The power cable is quite long so you're likely to reach an outlet, and the probe cables are also plenty long.
Overall, a great piece, but the probe thing adds so much to maintenance on the long run that it loses two whole stars. It says a lot that, although it fully met my needs, I replaced it by a similar model at the first probe replacement.

Nice simple instruments that work fine and are a great first set of probes for me.Published 24 months ago by Douglas P. Frantz
KINDA HARD TO SETUP THE PH PROBE AND IT DOESN'T GIVE EXACT PH READING SO IF YOU WANT IT FOR THAT DON'T BUY. Read morePublished on September 25, 2013 by Jason B.

work very well, nothing bad to say about this except poor packaging.not the box, but inside the box, the sensor was like a lone in the box, and its a very sensitive thing so. Read morePublished on December 28, 2012 by Armand
Will not work if you have digital ballast and no where does it say that I had to find out by Google when it wouldn't work but if I take it outside it works bulls@#$Published on November 27, 2011 by Nicole Nasuti
