"JD Mader has done it again in this second installment of the Matt Stark saga. Whereas the first book in this series, "The Biker", was a nod to Louis L'Amour, this one is more akin to Mickey Spillane in a pissed off mood - and I LOVE it! Much darker, much more sexual, and yet Mader digs even deeper into what's going on inside of our hero and the other main characters. Matt, Maria, and Striker all become much more "real" people in this one, as Mader is able to show more of the inner workings of each of them than he did in the first book. I guess, in a nutshell - the first book told us WHO Matt Stark is, and this book tells us much more about WHY Matt Stark is the man that he is. I was also tickled to death to see the reappearance of Hannigan, a character that I got a BIG kick out of in "The Biker".
To me, there's still the "Old West" correlations between Stark and the L'Amour western heroes, even though this is set in the current time, and even though this novel is definitely darker than anything L.L. wrote. I don't think the mind of L'Amour ever conjured up a villain quite as vile as Hobb...
If you liked "The Biker", you'll like "Hannigan's Fight", too - just be prepared for a bit of a different kind of tale this time out!
Oh, yeah - JD Mader has already set the hook with some "teasers" from the third Matt Stark novel - I can't wait!"
