These six wonderful works offer us a deeper experience of the work of Hans van Manen in addition to Concertante on another dvd. Music by Britten, Part, Bach, Scarlatti and even listenable Cage provide the inspiration for the movements. The dancers are amazing and the choreography top drawer world class fantastic. Two discs of terrific works. Solo, for 3 male dancers done to Bach's Partita for solo violin is my favorite, truly dazzling, athletic, and so right with the music. Deja Vu for male and female sparkles. There's more. Try it.

Whatever may be the label (classicist, neo-classicist, modern, post-modern, etc, etc.) which you might apply to these ballets, one of only two discs currently listed by Amazon as containing Van Manen's work) it consists of a series of ballets, all of which take place on a bare stage with backdrop, no scenery and no costumes other than form-fitting tights. There are interweavings of male and females in groups and in pairings but few leaps solo or female-assisted by male, none of them seeking height and/or distance. If you are a confirmed classicist or lean heavily toward the more traditional dance patterns which do not appear to be taking place in an only somewhat improved upon gymnasium, this is probably not for you unless you feel in an experimental mood. On the other hand, if this is your meat and potatoes or you are feeling in the mood to try something you just might like, this disc is a good place to start. The group patterns are intricate and stimulating to the eye, individual and partnered performances appear to this novice to be created by an agile mind and acted out by excellent dancers. It being my custom to "program" my limited exposure to my discs in this manner, I saw it over two nights. On the whole, that might be best if you are just starting in with this sort of thing. (I am not connected for receiving new any programming from external sources so can show what I want as I want it to shown...at least as far as viewing time is concerned.)
Oh, yes, I did not watch the interview with van Manen which precede each segment of dances so do not comment upon it (of course).
So, on the whole, I am quite positive on the qualities of the disc and on the performances, and think it might appeal even to those who (quite justifiably) are devotees of a more classical style.

After getting the Hans Van Manen Festival, which was very good, I have seen more of his ballets and liked most. Here the best for me is Two Pieces for Het -- masterful modern dance. This nicely shows his range of work.
