I picked up “Hansel” by Ella James in the boxed set. I don’t recall if this was a purchase or a freebie, but something about it caught my attention. There are so many aspects to this story that I’m unsure where to begin. It is a romance, of sorts. It’s also a psychological drama. It’s one of those books where you want to dislike it intensely but find that there as aspects that speak to you so you can’t seem to put it down. The main characters, Hansel and Gretel (Luke and Leah), are a pair of tortured souls, who spent a brief amount of time together only never to see each other again. Until Vegas. All hail, bachelorette parties. While sitting through a show like no other, Leah is suddenly face to face with her past. A past until then that many didn’t quite believe. (That’s your spoiler.)

The psychological aspects to the story are difficult to read. If you have, or know anyone with PTSD, these are the parts that are difficult to read because James lays it out there in a way that’s believable—everything from disbelief of family members to masochistic tendencies in order to feel (maintain a sense of control). All of the small and big nuggets she lays out there are not only plausible, but are very much in line with reality (as in, I’ve known people who struggle with these things).

And yes, warning, there are BDSM elements. It fits the story. Deal with it. If it bothers you, move on and don’t order a copy. But…But…if you want to read a gripping story that crazily does have a happy ending, then give this a chance. It’s rough. It’s painful. You won’t like aspects of it. But it’s good. It really is. (And if you read my other reviews, I don’t say that very often.)

I didn't know what to expect..and wow..it's way darker than the other 2 fairy tales.
I love it..Hansel and Gretel..Leah and Lucas..
What happens when they meet again after ten years?
We get flashbacks from the past and we see what they became in the present..even though not everything is what it seems!
Ohhh..Leah has a mask..Lucas doesn't realize who she really is..until he does..
we get to see Lucas's past..wow..effed up..and damn if I'm not curious for more..
Leah is waiting for Lucas to come to term with this, with her..but what will he do?
It's going to be so bad..I can feel it!
Hansel and Gretel back in mother's house..can't even think about it..
Hansel tries to get rid of Gretel..but he can't..she's stubborn and he can't decide what to do with himself..
The end was...arggg...everything came perfectly together!!! Epic and mysterious and hot as hell!

Think of a Criminal Minds episode where a creepy woman has an obsession with fairy tail stories. She kidnaps children to make them her own personal character. Hansel was her first victim. He connects with the girl who was kidnapped to be Gretel. A bond is made, even though they only talk through a small hole in the wall that divides them. Years later they meet up by chance. They are both haunted by their past. Hot sex scenes that involve pleasure and pain. The story jumps back and forth between past and present. Sometimes confusing.

What a fairy tale! ;) Instead of hidden passage ways, wicked witches, dragons and talking donkeys. This Series gave you much more and a bit of a difference in a fairy tale for the adult.

Sure there was dungeons and a wicked witch and a king and Queen, but in reality they were real people who were put in charge of the lives of young people and determined their life in the future, whether it was bad or good or hideous. In Luke and Leah's case down right awful and a child in this world should never go through life with what they had to endure and yet it's happening in real life even as I type out this review and it's absolutely sad.

I have to admit I wasn't fond of the story line but the message and reality what actually does happen when a child is taken is harsh and sad. And though these two people found solace in each other the likelihood that actually happens is rare. Mrs. James did a great job in writing this story and making us feel the story, though sad and very adult written. I did feel the ending left me short and definitely wanting more which she has promised in a news letter so I will wait for that.

How do I feel about this series, you ask?

I WANT TO WRITE MY ENTIRE REVIEW IN CAPS. I want to beat up my couch cushions. I want to throw something on the ground so it breaks and then run around in circles.

HOW DO I EXPRESS MY EMOTIONS?!?!?!?

I loved the characters. I loved their messed up back stories.

And guess what else? The sex was HOT. Every. Single. Scene. And there was just the right amount.

Yes, there was a ton of errors, both of the grammar and formatting variety. But the story was so good I didn't even care. A lot of the story took place in Las Vegas and I'm not even going to criticize how long the author thinks it takes to get to the airport from the Strip.

The ending was a bit cheesy, just the way I like. I don't know what else to say except, if you like dark reads but also romance, GO READ THIS.
