One day last spring while on tour with his band Guster, Adam Gardner was hanging out on the bus with friend Dave Schneider of the other band on the bill, The Zambonis. They were discussing being Jewish when Adam asked Dave if he wanted to make an album of original songs about Hanukkah-not traditional or comedic but light-hearted, spirited, rockin' songs. At first Dave thought he was joking, but Adam said, "Dude, I'm serious." The two picked up guitars and TheLeeVEes were born. Eight days later the album Hanukkah Rocks was completely written. Call it kismet, call it b'sheret, but most important, call it the miracle of Hanukkah.
Picking up where Adam Sandler left off, Adam Gardner, Dave Schneider (The LeeVees) and friends turn in an entire batch of Hanukah novelty tunes that are simultaneously hummable, at times funny and clever and played with a kind of informed garage rock spirit and oddball sensibility that will appeal to fans of They Might Be Giants and NRBQ. They sing as much about the cultural underpinnings of the season as they do about the meaning of the menorah, musing about how the hell you spell "Channnnukah" (sic), "Kugel," and "Applesauce vs. Sour Cream" (on those delicious potato cakes). Clearly--like everyone else, Jew or Gentile--they live to eat at this festive time. The fun keeps rolling as they get Adam's mom involved on the tune about the timeshare in Florida, and rhyme Madonna with Kabala, pondering how the former got into the latter, then take us to the Matzah Ball in "Jewish Girls," a Jewish singles party with "girls all shapes and sizes." Oy, and yes it does, it rocks too! -- Martin Keller

The CD is a new take on Hanukkah and listened to as such, it is fun: clever, rocking along, nice voices, good instrumental and acceptable recording/production quality. Would go well for dessert when folks are talked out for a while, ready to listen and be entertained.
Listeners who want a great version of the old classic songs may wish to buy or upload a supplementary CD. Of these songs, there isn't an echo. No "Oh Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, come light the menorah" or other kind of hora. Your choice, but the price is low enough may be you/we can have it all? If the space had permitted, I personally would have liked a few of the classics on this CD so we could have it all on one disc.
But try it, you might like it, Sam I am!
This is a fun CD full of catchy tunes that young and old will enjoy. We listen to this CD every year at Hanukkah time, and it is always fantastic.
All the teens in Art find themselves humming, if not singing to each song. Religious intolerance has found no home in our classes and all of the kids appreciate the tunes. It give them a whole new light to Hanukkah and Judaism.
Best Hanukkah Cd out there! Modern, and something the WHOLE family can enjoy!
Definitely worth the money spent!
