Top customer reviews
All of the kids (and adults) love it from 5yr - 9yr in our family. Our 9yr +7yr olds work together building and reading the directions and it's wonderful to see them work together.
We tried another cheaper (1/3 price) marble set from another company and it's horrible compared to the Hape sets.
Also, we purchased a basic wood block set and then we could make even crazier marble runs (see picture).
The kit is very well-made. Although it is manufactured in China, the Swiss design is evident. The pieces are smooth and have no rough edges. The spiral mazes are solid and well-designed. You need to have the model on a level surface, since the tracks depend on the red ramps to accelerate the marbles through the maze. The tracks must remain level, and not inclined to work properly. The manual points this out on the first page.
The manual is a necessity as you start building the models, and seeing how the parts impact the marble direction. Each model takes about 20 minutes to build, once you are familiar with it. One critique about the manual is that you need to view it in good daylight. The colors of the blue, green, and cyan blocks in the printed manual are very close in color. The same can be said for the yellow and tan blocks. A 'C', 'B'. 'G' printed on or near the block in the manual would help out.
I am looking forward to seeing how my grandsons do later down the line with this kit. I think they will try their own designs, which enhances the fun factor of this toy.
Yes, it is expensive, but I believe it will be a well-used toy and enjoyed for years. Even the parents were eager to help make the different models.
ORGANIZATION: Each type of block (based on the internal marble pathway) is a different color, and each step of the instructions shows the new pieces in color. If you pay attention to the color and orientation of the blocks you cannot go wrong.
STABILITY: The each piece is basically a rectangular block with a circle protruding from one end. This allows them to stack nicely without the annoyance of having to snap anything together. It also means you can't put the pieces on the run upside down by accident. Also, you can build this on carpet. It's a little wobbly until you get three "feet" connected but then it's fine.
WOOD: I started out as one of "those" parents who wanted all our toys to be wood. Over the years I have gotten over that as I have seen that some toys are just better made of plastic. This marble run is 99% wood and in this case wood is perfect. The toy is solid, heavy enough to help with stability, and feels nice when you hold the pieces.
FUN: Once the run is put together it is really fun to feed the marbles in over and over. The red blocks have a small plastic doohickey inside which puts every other marble out the other side, so once your marbles get to a red block half of them go through one part of the run and half through the other. It makes for a neat effect when the marbles are in motion.
