Disclaimer: All of my parts were included and in one piece without damage. I can understand negative reviews for that, but not for difficulty building it. My 7 year old and I were able to complete it in less than 45 minutes.
Super helpful trick: I took the hex wrench that was included, cut off the short end and made a drill bit to be used in my DeWalt 18v drill/driver. Cut building time in half at least. Set it on torque setting 1 and did not go all the way on any of my screws until the very end. Once all screws were in and aligned, I set the torque to 3 and finished drilling each screw in.
As another reviewer noted, Hape is German company, but the outside box that it came in AND the actual toy box were clearly marked "Made in China". See pics. below.
Construction is solid. The floors are pretty slim, but sturdy enough. Pretty stiff, about 1/4" thick. Could they have made it 1/2", probably, but it will be fine as long as they done decide to pull it out and use it as karate practice.
With a 7 year old son (who helped build - but is also a lego genius) and a to be 3 year old daughter, I have put together my fair share of toys. I also consider myself to be a little bit of a handyman. Construction was straight forward, make sure when you are putting in the 12 cross beams that you make sure the slots all line up and you will be fine.
If you got all the pieces and they were not broken, construction is a snap, unless you are one of the less incompetent other buyers.
SUPER CUTE, can't wait for my daughter to open it!!
We had experience with the Plan Toys Terrace dollhouse (friend let us borrow it for a while), but I wanted something more "classic
rather than modern. And this dragged out as I searched for the "perfect" dollhouse. Finally, a few weeks ago, we were at a party and the family there had this dollhouse, and I though "ok, I'm spending too much time not buying a dollhouse but agonizing over it. Just buy this one!"
So I did.
And I regret it :D
It's fine - it's a lovely dollhouse. Fwiw, I also really like the hape posable dollhouse people that you can buy seperately.
But - I regret this simply because it is definitely not as nice quality as the similarly priced Plan Toys dollhouse. That one is a much sturdier wood. This is lightweight wood with thin floors that slide into grooves. Assembly wasn't a pain - I mean, yeah, things didn't line up perfectly, but as I tightened all the screws, everything did come together.
But this isn't an heirloom. someone will trip or throw something, and one of the floors will crack or break. It's just not that rock-solid substantial wood dollhouse. But the Plan Toys dollhouse was/is. And so my issue in the first place was that I wanted that classic "traditional" feeling dollhouse that was still accessible to a 2 year old (and I can't find one that fits the bill). But even given the compromise to the modern/open sort of dollhouse, I do wish I had purchased the Plan Toys one instead.
I mean, since we already had the plan toys one for 6 months, I just was trying to get an "even better one" - but the truth is, it was really nice, sturdy, and functional. And I should have stuck with it.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who agonizes over the dollhouse choices! kidkraft, hape, plan toys ...
I say go with plan toys. Having seen/used all of them.
