Where I have previously raved over Lydia Dare's lycans, I have now come to the conclusion that it doesn't have to be lycans to make me love her books - it is just her books! This was a quick read with quite the romantic conclusion.
Blaire is very headstrong and doesn't listen to any man in her life. She had grown up with an abusive drunken father so pretty much raised herself and her brothers. So even though one of her brothers is older than her, she is the one who pretty much rules the roost. When she discovers the man locked in the cellar of the castle that her brother has just inherited, she not only lets him out, but invites him to stay! Because she is a "battle-born" witch, she thinks that she is able to handle any situation - but she has never been up against vampyres before. It is a good thing that Lord Kettering is taken with her and vows to protect her - as he has a couple of vampyres that have been looking for him for the last 20 years.
Lord Kettering and his good friend and creator Matthew Blodswell aren't your run-of-the-mill vampyres. They are truly the gentleman vampyres that the series suggest. They do not kill for food and they never change a person into a vampyre unless the person wants to be changed. (They reminded me of the vampires from The Twilight series - difference is that this all takes place in the early 1800's.Read more ›
Blaire is not a typical woman of her times. She's actually pretty special and unique. Her friends don't think she's odd, neither does her family. But she also has a legacy to live up to and she thinks she knows what she needs to do. After all, as is custom, her mother taught her everything she knows, right? This unexpected journey she takes to the castle her brother inherited proves that history is a bit skewed and there are a few little secrets her mom kept to herself. What Blaire doesn't know is about to bite her in her cute and perky little derriere.
I found the heroine tended to worry things too much and that lent itself to the conflict. I like her spunk and her willingness to throw herself into the fray. Once she figures a few things out, she's rises to the occasion and doesn't back down, even when she should. In fact, in spite of knowing she should she goes where angels and fools fear to tread. Sometimes I was exasperated with her and other times I applauded her fortitude. Blaire certainly isn't perfect so it's a good thing she has her loving family around to keep her grounded.
Her family consists of her older brother, Aiden and her younger, Brannock. Siblings can be annoying and aggravating and the author depicted that aspect with vivid clarity. I rolled my eyes so often whenever Brannock interrupted and shouted and made Blaire guess certain things instead of just coming right out and stating the facts, that I thought my eyes would get stuck rolled up in my head. I knew the heroine loved her family but did they have to grate on my nerves so much?Read more ›
Cheesy...big time!!! If I saw this in the bookstore I would just keep on going and not bother to pick it up to investigate it further.
My First Reaction When I Finished:
When is book two available?????????? Now?? Soon???? This was fun!
Judging by the cover I set my expectations low when I cracked this book open. But I'm happy to report that I found this to be a fun read that I flew through in no time! I thought the author had a very cool twist in the last part of the book that really added to the overall story and made me smile. This isn't one of those cheesy vampire stories at all!! I laughed a few times and I felt engaged in the story. What I found the most interesting is that Lydia Dare is actually 2 women! Each one writes 1,500 words and then sends it to the other one for editing, and that one then writes 1,500 words and the other edits. It works and I never ever found a crack within their storyline whatsoever.
Favorite character? James, the Vampyre. I loved the way he desired Blaire and how he wanted to take care of her.
"I keep getting this pain within my chest."
"Pain?" Finally, he had Matthew's attention.
"That's what I said," James repeated as he spun to face Matthew. He looked perplexed.
"We don't experience heartache. Longing. Love. It's one of the sacrifices of having eternal life." He met Jame's gaze. "Allow me to ask you a question?"
"As though I could stop you," James replied.
"Would you give up eternal life for a heart? For the ability to love? For Miss Lindsey?"
James rubbed the heels of his hands into his eyes and groaned. "Without a moment's hesitation," he finally said beneath his breath.Read more ›
