From Booklist

Sidney Sinclair vents all of her frustration with her ex-fiancé on a handsome but arrogant FBI agent who hits on her at a coffeehouse by telling him that she knows he is a player, and she is looking for something substantial. Minutes later, she discovers the agent is the brother of her sister’s new fiancé. Vaughn knows Sidney’s assessment of him was pretty accurate, but why can’t he enjoy women? The problem is that he is way too attracted to Sidney, even with her list of requirements for a boyfriend. They become friends and then add benefits in rising romance author James’ (Love Irresistibly, 2013) sparkling, sexy love story that delivers as much emotional warmth as sensual heat. Action at Vaughn’s job is interspersed with interesting details about Sidney’s high-powered financial career, and James’ smart heroines and fun dialogue are becoming her signature elements. While the conclusion is inevitable, the journey is well worth the read. Fans may also enjoy titles by Deirdre Martin and Christie Ridgway. --Amy Alessio

Review

"James is a contemporary romance superstar, known for intelligent characters and quick, witty dialogue that ratchets up intense sexual tension. Her new novel goes in a slightly different direction from her recent titles, creating strife without any external suspense devices--to great effect. Sexy and effervescent." -Kirkus Reviews

It Happened One Wedding felt a little different from Julie James' previous novels. I think there was serious tone that wasn't in the other stories, and it really clicked with me.

Sidney is back in Chicago starting a new job after leaving New York, and a ruined relationship. After discovering her fiancé was cheating on her, Sidney feels she's wasted three years of her life. She should already be married and starting a family, something Sidney really wanted at this point in her life. At thirty-three she doesn't want to waste time on good-time guys, and commitment-phobes. Sidney wants to find a man that wants the same things in life. It's not that she begrudges those men, it's their right to live life as they wish, she just wants nothing to do with them. So when Vaughn makes a pass at her, Sidney brushes off his advances seeing him, knowing exactly the type of man he is:

"For men as attractive as you, this city is one big candy store, filled with so many shiny treats, you couldn't possibly choose just one. So instead, you run around with your obviously healthy ego, sampling as many of the goods as you can get your hands on--simply because you can."

Not my idea of an attractive prospect, and definitely not Sidney's. Vaughn can't believe Sidney would reject him, even though she was spot on in her description of him, he still doesn't like the smug way she nailed him. But seeing as they'll never lay eyes on each other again, oh well, right? Wrong. Just so happens Sidney's sister, Isabelle is marrying Vaughn's brother Simon, and they are to be thrown together not only because they'll soon be in-laws, but because they're both in the wedding.

This is the very first Julie James book that I can't give 5 stars. And it kills me to say that. But this one just didn't do it for me as much as her other stories. I read it in one sitting, which is normal because I love her stuff so much. But I found myself skimming a lot. Especially during the work scenes. I could care less about Sydney and her successful job. So she makes a lot of money and she's good at what she does. I don't need pages upon pages to tell me that. Just show it and be done. In her other FBI stories it seemed that the characters interacted more in the story (i.e. at work). In this one, they only interacted when it came to wedding things for their siblings. I kept waiting for one of the bad guys from Vaughn's case to see him with Sydney and go after her. Or for Sydney's father to be bad and Vaughn would have to take him down. I don't know. It just didn't have that constant spark where the two characters were forced together so much that they didn't have an escape. That's what I love most about her stories. The sexual tension was high and I still wanted to find out what happened at the end, but I didn't L-O-V-E it like her other stories. It was a bit more explicit than I'm used to also. No problem with that, per se. It just surprised me how graphic she made this one. Especially since the cover seems to allude it would be more of a sweet story. Like I said, it didn't bother me, but it surprised me a little.

I would definitely recommend this book, because, COME ON, it's Julie James. It just wasn't my favorite.

The womanizer meets his match!!!

This was another Classic Julie James. Her books follow a winning pattern without being repetitive or boring. Ms. James excels at light, fun, modern romances set in the real world. The characters are real - albeit attractive, smart, and successful - people. No wimps, either make or female! They're light - not too serious - but with excellent character and plot development and HEAs. The dialogue is clever but also realistic. I LOVE the dialogue - especially Ms. James' heroines; they have the type of dialogue I like to think I have: Witty, sarcastic, sometimes biting, but not cruel.

Another hallmark of Ms. James's novels is that the relationship develops over time. Instant attraction, but not insta-love. The H grows over time. In the book some people may not like what's going on with the h while the H and h get together, but it makes sense in the context, it's honest, and it's kind of funny. Besides it's necessary to give the H a kick in the pants. Yes if the roles were reversed I might have a problem, but considering what the H is like in the beginning, he deserves it!! Yes I'm being intentionally coy so as not to spoil anything. No artificial drama. No ridiculous displays. No trite plot devices. Just light, fun, sexy romance.

Another trait of a Julie James: her books also are rich in detail with the background of the story - frequently law enforcement, lawyers, big business, etc. In one book it was wine tasting (and she may have gone overboard with the details in that book, but at least she gets the details right!!!!). Her accuracy in a range of topics is exciting and original. (Though I did catch an error about the law in one of her early books!!! Tsk, tsk! That is actually her area!!
