Now that Erin has learned the truth about the girls who tortured her, and about the boy she loves, she finds her time before graduation dwindling at an alarming and exciting pace. What used to be summer break was now a countdown to her final days in Blackwell. Her parents, Sam and Julianne struggle with the fear that just when they’ve found Erin, they must let her go, and the tension is higher than it’s been since Erin discovered who she really was.
Finally with the girl he’s loved since childhood, Weston grows more desperate as the summer days pass. He and Erin will go to separate colleges. His biggest fear is that this means they’ll go their separate ways. Plagued with making the best of the time he has left with Erin, and finding a way to make it last, Weston finds himself in a different state of mind hourly. He is just beginning to realize that hope is like quicksand. The harder Weston struggles, the faster Erin sinks.
Now that Erin knew all the truths, she needed to figure out what she was going to do with them. She would have to make big decisions that would effect not just her life, but everyone involved.
Knowing she could not make everyone happy, she needed to do the best thing for herself. Where would that leave her and Weston? Would it be over just as soon as it began?
Oh Weston! He went a little crazy in this one!! I was happy to see they got their happily ever after! Overall I enjoyed these novellas, they kept my attention and left my heart full!
This was a very satisfying conclusion to the Happenstance series, and is sure to please fans. Ms. McGuire did a fantastic job at wrapping up Weston and Erin's story in a very believable and realistic way, which is what we have come to expect of Ms. McGuire. This novel is markedly longer than the previous two, and it allowed Ms. McGuire to develop the characters much more deeply, and make these characters that we love come to life. We follow Weston and Erin through their last few months of high school and see how their relationship develops and grows.
The standout aspect of this novel for me was how both Weston and Erin were so realistic. Erin grows so much in this novel, and it was amazing to read how much she has progressed since the first novel. She truly becomes her own woman and realizes that she has had the strength in her all along. Erin can be who she wants, and she can't let anyone else get to her. Weston, on the other hand, becomes frantic and insecure- something we wouldn't really expect from him. However, I think it was extremely realistic for his characters to start freaking out when he realized that Erin was moving on to a college that he wasn't going to, and what that would mean for their relationship. Even though we don't actually read from his POV, Weston's emotion are showcased so clearly that you can easily tell exactly how he feels in every scene. It honestly felt at times, the chapters were told from both perspectives at the same time, and they were blended together so seamlessly that it was perfect. Obviously, this isn't true, but I think it highlights Ms. McGuire's extreme talent as an author in that she can make every single character come alive.
While some people might not be entirely happy with the conclusion, I don't think this series could have ended any other way. I think Ms. McGuire captured what a true relationship is. She showed that a relationship has its ups and downs, and is filled with insecurities and fear from either or both of the people involved, but also can be filled with truly wonderful moments that will last forever. I wouldn't mind reading more from Weston and Erin, but for now, I'm happy with how their story ended.
Happy reading :)
