Review

"Carole Brody Fleet’s book: Happily Even After answers the many questions that grieving spouses have to deal with, and does so with compassion, depth, and a light touch. The questions she deals with range from ‘whom I now?’ to ‘how do I deal with the sense of guilt—deserved or not?’—to ‘how do I deal with the finances or with the children’?, to “when and how do I return to dating, to sex, and to remarriage?’"
South Florida Jewish Journal

"I really admire your organization [and] I really believe in what you're doing. It's an unbelievable testament to survival."
—Nate Berkus

Happily Even After is the 2013 recipient of the prestigious BOOKS FOR A BETTER LIFE AWARD.

"In Happily Evan After, Carole Brody Fleet has fresh things to say about the intricacies of intimacy, returning to the workplace, the grief of children, and remarriage. This book is recommended for its authentic depiction of the widow's experience."
–Spirituality & Practice

"The loss of a soulmate can seem like the end of the world. Happily Even After: A Guide to Getting Through (and Beyond) the Grief of Widowhood is an inspirational read from Carole Brody Fleet as she shares her own story of grief and struggle after losing her husband at forty, leaving her at midlife without the man she thought to grow old with. With advice on adapting to a new life as a single person once more, grieving, moving on, and much more, Happily Even After is a must for self-help and inspirational collections, highly recommended."
—Midwest Book Review

"Chock full of personal questions and powerful answers, Happily EVEN After is full of compassionate and heart healing advice. With a wisdom garnered from experience, Carole Brody Fleet's comforting, hand-held approach will help you move through the anguish of being "half" and into the life-inspiring solace of feeling whole again."

—Judy Ford, author of Every Day Love: The Delicate Art of Caring for Each Other

"The author of Widows Wear Stilettos has done it again! Happily Even After fills a critical gap that aims to support the widowed mother thereby supporting her children. By speaking honestly and from experience, Carole Brody Fleet conveys her respect and understanding of the unchartered territory of widowhood. This book is a beacon of hope in a sea of darkness. A true survivor’s survival guide."
—Jill Starishevsky, author of My Body Belongs to Me

"Bravo to Carole Brody Fleet! As a young widow with five children, I feel connected to Happily Even After. Each chapter gives voice to the different scenarios a widow encounters. A heartfelt and concrete roadmap that can guide widows through an emotionally challenging and chaotic time."
—Charlene Khaghan, author of A Tiny Step Forward -Providing Children a Positive Way to Cope with Grief

"I like this book because it has spunk and because it is practical and not preachy. Carole Brody Fleet's lists of things that can wait for awhile and of things that CAN'T wait can be put to immediate use, for example. Her suggestions for establishing a routine are healthy. And since emotions do not go away, it is important not to skip any steps in healing. I also like the authors' assurances that everyone is unique; that you are in charge; and if you can't find it, create it. Carole's idea about celebrating Valentine's Day anyway shows the sort of creativity that she encourages. Not that creativity surges back, of course. It may well ebb at first, then flow again. Happily Even After offers a strong list of referrals and itself is a powerful guide to navigating a touch course."
—Linda Hawes Clever, MD author of The Fatigue Prescription

Since my husband died, I have struggled to accept the notion that I COULD be happy again. After losing my best friend, I wasn't actually sure I wanted to be happy even though I am so tired of being sad. As I read Carole Brody Fleet's book, I recognized myself, and my feelings, on page after page. It was as if she was reading my mind. I appreciate that this book is full of practical advice about finding happiness again without minimizing my grief or suggesting that moving forward will be a painless process. Knowing that Carole herself has suffered the same kind of loss that I have, makes her words of encouragement uniquely powerful.

Thank you Carole for proving to me that widowhood doesn't have to mean I will never be happy again. But thank you too for not implying that I have to leave behind a man I love so much in order to create a new life.

Yesterday I saw author Carole Brody Fleet on HUFFPOLIVE talking with Nate Berkus about love and loss and what to hold on to and i immediately ran out and got a copy of the HAPPILY EVEN AFTER. I lost my husband a year ago and went through a really hard time - emotionally, financially, and in every possible way. Carole's book is already helping me. It is a funny thing with widowhood, as you feel so alone. And, at night, you usually are alone for the first time in years. So, Carole's warm, friendly and oh-so helpful voice really comes across in the book. When it gets too hard, (usually at bedtime) I can now read this book and feel like I have a friend who lost her husband before I did and can offer excellent advice on every aspect of widowhood and how to get though and beyond the pain. Bravo to Carole Brody Fleet for lighting the way in the darkness for all us widows!

A gem of a book, and not just for those who are young widows or feel young at heart and miss their dearly beloved. Carol Brody Fleet's message resonates with compassion, candor and practical insights about what it's like to lose a partner at an early age, and how you can face the challenges with confidence and grace.

I haven't experienced early widowhood, but I do have friends who lost a partner early on. I wish I had read this book years ago - really, I wish it had been written ages ago - so I could be a better friend and show deeper understanding of what they were going through. With an estimated 20 million widows in this country, many under 40, it's a topic that touches us all. The better we can support the healing and grieving process for those who are left behind, the better our society will be.

The chapters on dating and intimacy are priceless. These are the questions we have, and Fleet addresses them head on. She weaves real questions and comments in with her private life experience, and we as the reader come to fall in deep admiration for the trail she had to blaze.

Thank you for stepping and showing us that Widows wear Stilletos. That life continues after you say goodbye to the past, and that death can be honored with a bit of wry humor, when appropriate.

Sound advice delivered with an authentic voice. Brava!

I wish I'd had this book years ago when I was a young widow. The warmth, wisdom, and genuine care for others shines through on every page. Even if you are not a widow, but family or a friend, there is practical and beneficial knowledge to be shared. Thank you Carole. I know that many people will be helped and supported by your book.

12 years ago a friend of mine lost her husband and asked me to help her with the paperwork. I learned a lot and at that time I thought, "how do people do this when they're still in shock. Someone should write a book". Fast forward 12 years and Happily Even After arrives in the mail from a publisher asking if I'd like to interview the author. Needless to say, it took me less than 2 seconds to decide: ABSOLUTELY YES. This is not your typical 'how to grieve', or 'getting through the grief' book. This is a comprehensive guide to all that must and will occur immediately following the loss of a partner. Married or not, I don't care what the situation is or what the sexual orientation is - there is business that must be addressed and cannot wait and Carole speaks to it so very well. She also goes beyond that and includes the situations that arise down the road, soup to nuts, it's all inclusive. She's been there, done that, and now, she share with everyone how to go through the process. You'll realize you're not alone in your thoughts or actions. Others have done the same thing and felt the same way. You'll be able to ease the pain because everything you're going through someone else, many actually, have gone through. It is normal to feel the way you feel and to have the questions you have. Carole is a patient, caring, kind, empathetic individual, all of which clearly comes across in her writing. It is a must read for every widow and I will add, it should be given immediately to every person who becomes widowed so they will have the tools they need to survive. Thank you, Carole, for sharing your story and finding the strength to write such a practical, comprehensive and much needed guidebook that I am quite sure will help millions.
