About the authors

James D. Baird, Ph.D. has more than forty years of experience as a successful inventor and graduate engineer. A pioneer in the new science of ultrasonics, Baird has earned several patents and as a successful entrepreneur founded Dynasonics, Inc. a design and manufacturing company of ultrasonic sensors and computers.
His inventor background instilled in him a persistent curiosity about how things work, translating from mechanisms to life. His passion for understanding the bioengineering that makes us human combined with his religious and spiritual beliefs has led him to research the subject of happiness for more than 20 years, and in the process, earned him a Ph.D. in Natural Health.
He was the founder of "Happiness Ministries," a not-for-profit ministry that produced inspirational texts. His first two books, The Happiness Plan (Liquori, 1990) and The Modern Christian's Happiness Plan (Wine Press 1999) are based upon the premise that happiness comes from altruistic ethics and behavioral choices that put into action such spiritual qualities as loving-kindness and compassion.. Baird has been involved with many religious organizations including; nursing homes, churches and charitable organizations. He was chairman of Catholic Charities for about 8 years. Dr. Baird is chairman of a Chicago chapter of the American Scientific Association, a national professional association whose members are scientists who believe in God. The organization's mission is to bring harmony to science and religion.
As a natural health advocate with an inventor's curiosity, he was intrigued by the paradox that "diets don't work." In an effort to uncover the reasons and provide an answer, he wrote his third book, The Mindful Meals Diet (iUniverse 2007), which explained how genetic factors are the basis of unhealthy eating habits that lead people to become overweight. His program incorporated self-hypnosis and mind/body strategies to develop healthy eating habits (www.mindfulmealsdiet.com).
From his research of genetics in diet evolved the understanding that humans have a spiritual nature and that faith is genetic. This confirmed his belief that the expression of spirituality is genetically motivated and results in natural happiness. Results from researching genetic behavior and the new science of epigenetics inspired Baird to write the HAPPINESS GENES.
Intrigued by people's behaviors, Baird used his 20 years of researching in behavioral genetics to write BEHAVIORAL GENES- why we do what we do and how to change. [published 2/13/15] This book describes the genetic roots of our most common behaviors providing understanding of why we do what we do. While other books note that the genetic heritability component of behaviors is unchangeable, Baird shows that genes aren't destiny. Using evidence that epigenetic modalities, such as: meditation, mindfulness, and cognitive therapy can modify behaviors, practical therapies are described in the last chapter of the book.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 23, 2012This book is a magnificent fusion of science, spirituality, historical references and current awakening of the human being. One must read with eagerness to learn more than what the books of the past have laid out as fact. Just like we used to think and believe the world was flat...this book helps you understand the human body is so much more than a fusion of cells. Being a yoga teacher, I found it quite an insightful book to add to my knowledge of the physical and mental and more. Personally, I think it should be a must read for anyone in the medical field. It is time to realize that nothing is black and white...simply different shades of gray. If I was a doctor, I would make it my motive to nourish hope and happiness with each moment of life. To ever give someone an estimated deadline of expected life is actually a breach of the Hippocrates code. It is harmful to diminish hope...it is courageous and worthy to promote happiness and awareness of each precious moment. Read this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2010This book is a great place for people to gain a general knowledge on the topics of genetics, well being, happiness, and the new and upcoming field of epigenetics. It presents these topics in a logical manner and does not overwhelm the reader with scientific language. Using everyday examples, and easy to follow data/studies, this book lays out the core mechanics of how happiness works on the genetic level, and the steps to improving your overall happiness. I would recommend this book to anyone who is curious about genetics or who just wants a source that gives them another way to approach living a happy life.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 26, 2010The premise of the book is absolutely correct: many of our genes are controlled by what we think or believe in our subconscious mind. Proverbs 7 says the same thing: "As a man thinketh in his heart (subconscious mind?), so is he."
Although he lauds Cold Spring Harbor as a "happy" science place. It has a very dark history as does the science of genitics. There is a lot of gloss used here.
He talks about "happiness genes", and cites only one: DRD2, a Dopamine neuroreceptor which isn't much good without the Dopamine neurotransmitter. Both of these are released during sexual activity, among others.
Further he says that "genes are expressed by hormones." Untrue. Genes produce aminoacids (et al), which generally link and form proteins which are divided into 5 classes: hormones, enzymes, neuro transmitters, neuroreceptors and structural protein. It is my understanding they are expressed by cellular generated ions.
I realize this book is written for "public" consumption, but a little more research would have probably served the author in good stead.
I'm only writing this review because I bought a review copy.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2010The Happiness Genes gives me hope that anyone can overcome their genes. For the left brained amongst us the scientific proof is readily available! For those of us who are afraid of physically turning into the worst parts of their parents genes this is a real goldmine of inspiration.

By James D. Baird, PhD, with Laurie Nadel, PhD
ISBN-13: 978-1-60163-105-3 (New Page Books, 2010)
Who could predict that the pursuit of happiness would lead directly to the connection between science and spirituality? As we enter higher levels of consciousness, human beings will find doors that will open to a much deeper human experience. Like most doors, they seem to be locked and the key is found in our meditative states, which can be entered only through love and compassion. The programming is already in place and Happiness Genes shows us a 28-day system to open those doors.
