While reading about Jersey and Zay, I ABSOLUTELY felt something (As Ms. Howard explains why she writes). Her words flowed into a wonderful river of a love story; the story was neither cute nor cuddly. It was a complex and difficult journey, but also a truly genuine LOVE story.
**I will try not to give away any spoilers.**

Jersey is a broken young lady, and rightfully so. Her father's harsh, abusive and sometimes drunken words rips her poor heart and soul apart. On one occasion he makes a point of acknowledging that Jersey not only inherited her mother's good looks, but emotional issues too... yup. Tears came to my eyes. What a sad, lonely, mean man! I wanted to slap him and curse his stupid, insensitive ass!
So understandably, Jersey feels alone and abandoned by both her deceased mother and her father. "Fate" had not been kind (as an old Gladys Knight song says), and she finds solace in her music and random hook-ups. Jersey was semi-content to "exist" in her small, tattered world; or so she believed. But as life often does, it slaps you right back into real life existence! And, in walks a gorgeous, gray-eyed, hot. Sexy. Driven. Tattooed young man who knows what and who he wants. He too is severely broken, but he lets her know right away what he wants, and he pulls out all of the stops! I will admit (but don't tell anybody) that I was completely and utterly engrossed in this story of young love. It brought back wonderful college memories of me and husband's bumpy start. Ms. Howard's character development and tone for each person was on point (Clearly she is a gifted, natural writer). The descriptions were vivid, and the pain was raw. The emotions were deep and heartfelt, but not overly mushy. Zay, was a just delicious. He made ME swoon with His words.

Happiness in Jersey by Jacinta Howard is one of those books that your heart just wasn’t prepared for. It just grabs you and doesn’t let go. For me, the tell-tale sign is that when I wake up in the morning, my first thoughts are about the main character in the book, Jersey. I was worried about her. How is she? What’s going to happen next? Yes, in other words, I was obsessed.

Jersey Kinkaid doesn’t believe in love. The only thing inevitable in life is death, she believes. She tries to make people believe she is tough. She is a sophomore at South Texas University on scholarship, works at Aroma coffee shop and plays bass in the band, Prototype. This has nothing to do with the story but it might be that I felt so much for this young girl because my Mom was a bass player during my growing up years. The music they played was quite different, of course, but I can totally understand the workings of a musician’s mind. My Dad was also a musician and my son currently is. Ok, now that that is out of the way, I want to tell you more about Jersey.

Jersey’s growing up years were not good. Her Dad is a drunk and over her lifetime has never shown her any kind of love or support. When things get tough and Jersey can’t stand the pressure inside her chest, she will have random hook-ups with guys for sex. Or turn to music. Music was her solace. But the night Isaiah “Zay” Broussard walked in during a Prototype rehearsal, with his gray sexy eyes, everything changed.

“I turned and looked at him, this guy I’d known for just a few weeks but seemed to innately understand me better than anyone ever had. The way he affected me was so thorough it was starting to overwhelm my hesitation, tear down my carefully constructed walls. I felt naked and exposed, and I was starting to not mind it.

I like this author's work! However, she drags her storylines out way too long(this is 2nd book written by her that I feel is like this); by that I mean I spent the majority of the book reading about Jersey's apprehensions about getting into a relationship with Zay, and her issues with her mother and father(all valid). The plot is so long that I think the writer missed out on what could have been a decent love story/relationship between Jersey and Zay. Sometimes you can write your storyline away, and end up with a mess. She had the storyline in the palm of her hands, and let it slip away by dragging out Jersey's issues. Remember Zay had his own baggage, but he was determined not to let his past affect his present/future. Just like I know people deal with problems in different ways and in their own time. I also get that people come into relationships with baggage and hang ups, but come on this was so long it became boring in a sense. I will give her props on her love scenes, although a bit too bland for my liking! Again, if you're gonna drag a storyline out like she did, at least treat us with the bomb love scenes; at least there were two, her last book had only one. When I read a description of a romance novel, I expect to read about love, romance and everything that goes with it. Overall, it is a good book! Could it have been better? Absolutely, the storyline was good, and I like that there was not alot of outside drama that would call for her to stretch the storyline out longer than what she did! I loved Zay's character and role and everything about him. You wil not be disappointed in Zay's character that much I can say.
