- "An engaging collection of astute observations. The cumulative effect is feeling a sense of peace and hope - if not outright happiness than a real sense of potential for appreciating what life has to offer, and avoiding those things that bring it down, so the book is successful in its intent. Anyone seeking advice and comfort, whether for currently arising challenges or a general sense of longing for a more peaceful path, will benefit from Hung's well-considered, sensible, and stimulating selections." - Self-Publishing Review
- "A very informative book that would guide us towards an ultimate success. "The Happiness Journal" by Viet Hung is definitely the most reliable source of warding off all the burdens of a depressed and worried mind. It acts like a tranquilizer and heals the mind more than a prescribed dose of a tranquilizer might ever do. The book in itself is a well-established rehabilitation center, it shows us the way towards a life full of all the meanings that we wouldn't be able to explore otherwise." - Reedsy Discovery

Written as a series of blog posts over the past ten years – ‘I seriously started writing a blog in 2009. Since then, I’ve kept writing and following my own sense, feelings, and thoughts without thinking too much about who would read my posts. Now that I’ve read through all of my posts again, I’m thrilled to see that he core values I chose to adopt at the beginning of my journey are still fresh and still hold true ten years later. They have helped bring many happy moments and luck into my life!’ – the book simply works!
The general path that this spiritually uplifting collection of thoughts is suggested as the author writes, ‘Sensing Happiness: We’re born, we grow up, we get old, and we ultimately depart from this life. That’s a harsh and inevitable yet natural process. Interestingly, some questions accompany us throughout the course of our lives: Are we living, or just existing? Are we living for ourselves and being ourselves, or are we just living a dependent life? With each moment that passes by, what can we learn from it? What is the meaning that this life brings to us?’
Accompanied with color photographs when appropriate, this little journal is rich in helpful thoughts to initiate our probing the meaning of life and happiness. This is a tome to keep by the bedside to help make the days and times make sense by searching beyond into the realm that Việt Hùng takes us. Grady Harp, June 21
This work is a compilation of Hung’s posts, which he first published on his personal blog. They touch on various topics such as finding happiness at work, letting go of worry, achieving inner peace, and interacting positively with others. While some of the chapters are simple observations, others are based on an event from the author’s life or include an anecdote.
The posts are meant to be read one at a time. For example, you can keep the book on your bedside table and begin every day with some positivity or read a chapter before going to sleep. That way, there is time for each message to sink in and impact you before you move on to the next.
What’s particularly impressive about Hung’s work is that he is a non-native English speaker who translated his entire book on his own. To me, this worked really well because he has a unique yet easily understandable voice. What’s more, his cultural and religious background might offer a fresh perspective to many Western readers.
If I were to suggest one thing to add to this journal, it would be more practical exercises. The author includes some links and QR codes to his meditations, which are very helpful. I would have liked to see his suggestions tied together into a program or “mental exercise plan” for the reader to follow. Maybe this could be an idea for a follow-up book.
In this text, Hung sufficiently gives suggestions, notes, and sage advice on living a happy life. The art of giving, being true to oneself, and being in touch with nature are some of the keys the author gives to living a joyous life. Packed with inspiring anecdotes and the author's life experiences, this book is captivating and designed to be savored in small doses.
Marked with oriental/eastern philosophy, the book is wrought with optimism as Hung's encouraging tone is felt throughout the reading. "The Happiness Journal" is a beautiful addition to its genre.

It is written by Vietnamese blogger, Viet Hung, who has taken 10 years of blog posts and pulled them together into 'sips' of happiness. However, English is not the first language of Hung and there are some areas where it appears to have been a direct translation. The language used is simple and approachable, which is nice and it is addressed why simple language is chosen throughout, but a bit of editing could add a final polish to the book.
I love the concept of pulling key moments of learnings and happiness throughout Hung's life that we can apply to our own lives and similar moments we experience, but some feel a little unfinished. I would like a little more depth, a little more in the application to make it approachable for the reader, not just through the looking glass, but 'taking this moment and applying this lesson to any scenario in your life, the reader - how to'. This bit is missing for me, in some instances, especially as the book progresses.

I particularly liked the idea of these blogs as “sips” of happiness. I think it’s a lovely way of describing the small doses of positive thinking that are contained within this book.
The only real shame about the book is that the writing style can be a little off-putting from time to time, with some awkward phrasing and jarring language. Perhaps for this reason, I found the most useful parts of the book were the most plainly written: direct questions asked of the reader and bullet-pointed suggestions of reflection points or things to consider.

From the offset Viet Hung does warn that his language is simplistic - partly by the nature of it originally being translated from Vietnamese and partly because he feels concepts should not be overcomplicated. However I felt this book to be lacking in tangible guidance and support for the reader in comparison to many self-help books, with nice concepts not fully formed or explained. I felt there was a lot of emphasis on the end goal of being happier and more successful but strangely without much guidance as to how to achieve this, short of lots of questions for the reader.
I really warmed to Viet and love the idea of "sips" of positivity on which to ponder but I didn't feel there was anything ground-breaking or new to offer the reader. As such, although it was a nice read, I haven't come away from this book with any particularly memorable ideas to put into practice. This being said, it may work as a book of positivity to dip into if you just need a bit of motivation as Viet is enthusiastic and encouraging and the nature of the book means you can read it in any order.

This is a fantastic book that not only gives you a list of things to consider in order to enhance your life but also explains each one in-depth and provides practical examples.
You will want to reread this book several times to be sure you've absorbed everything. It will also be beneficial to pull out when you feel caught in a rut and feel that you should be doing something more productive with your life.
This book is great for giving you a boost to improve your life and gain some perspective.

By the time I finished reading one, waiting for some further insight or explanation, the next one came along, most of the times totally unrelated to the previous question/issue.
I personally would have liked more structure and more elaboration on the topics, but I understand that the book is what it is and I admire the author for the time they dedicated to their work.
If the author ever decided to expand on the topics, then it could have a lot of potential.
