Dr. Bialylew shares the scientific research behind mindfulness meditation - why it works and how to start, with minimal time investment. We have so much influence on our health, effectiveness, joy and happiness. She encourages us to learn to observe and manage our thoughts, and avoid getting lost in "negative thought loops" as a crucial skill to become more resilient. You've probably heard the term "neuroplasticity" ... it basically means our brains have the capacity to adapt and change throughout our lifetime. Our minds have so much control over our bodies ... our bodies believe our inner dialog - what we say to ourselves, whether it's true or not. By learning to observe our thoughts and correct our thinking, we can choose thoughts and actions that are beneficial to us instead of those that are self-destructive.
I think this book is great for those who are new to mindfulness and meditation as well as experienced practitioners. I already have a mindfulness practice, and I'm looking forward to adding more ways to be intentionally mindful (e.g. walking, eating, seeing, working).
The 30-day plan, broken down daily and grouped into four weekly segments, presents a blueprint for building the habit of mindfulness into your life. This is a gem of a book, and a great contribution to the body of literature about meditation and mindfulness.
I agree with Dr. Elise when she says this about meditation: “… we can more effectively interpret the real meaning of someone’s words, and stay connected to what we feel from moment to moment, giving us a better ability to respond. We can also do this while maintaining awareness of the other person’s emotional state. This enables more effective communication, and is the basis upon which we can build emotional intelligence, the foundation of wisdom and happiness in our lives.”
I recommend meditation to all my clients because the benefits are so plentiful. If you do one thing this year, give yourself the gift of meditation. The Happiness Plan is an excellent place to begin. Dr. Bialylew’s breaks it down into bite-size pieces so you experience success one step at time. You’ll be glad you purchased this book.
This quote is one of the ways Dr. Bialylew describes what mindfulness can help us achieve. She leads us through that doorway by sharing an honest telling of her experiences and studies of mindfulness and what it means. It is a clear and easy to read discussion of mindfulness and meditation, and moves it away from the realm of “out-there, ethereal, and magic.” She dispels myths about mindfulness and, from Aristotle to modern day scientists, gives us theory but, also real studies and information. We come to understand so much about our brains and its connection to our bodies and well-being.
Early in her introduction she says, “I knew I wanted to be of service, to help others flourish and make a positive difference in the world. . .” In my opinion this book is one of the many ways she has achieved that goal. Dr. Bialylew gives us a 30-day, very well laid out plan to begin training our brains with mindfulness. It is even complete with recipes so that we can be mindful about what we eat. I highly recommend this book to everyone.
