I spent my youth in Lackawanna, NY trying to figure out a way to dream my way out of the poverty I grew up in. I’ve spent a good portion of my adult life dreaming my way back into that life. No matter what characters I have written about from All-Bright Court to the Addy series, I have used the voice I have to give a voice to characters who I feel did not, or would not have had a voice within the circumstances of their worlds.

Quirky Facts About Me:

I’m a science geek.

I listen to old time radio shows.

I love okra.

I survived the Jheri Curl wars.

I’ve been known to listen to Broadway show tunes—and sing along.

When I was younger I would kiss the cover of books I loved.

If I could have married these men, I would have—Sam Cooke, Groucho Marx, Muhammad Ali.

It was a library edition, had a lot of stickers on the front, but still glad to get it since it was the last one I needed to add to the set

5.0 out of 5 stars Addy's Birthday

This book shows how prejudice people were towards black people in Addy's time. Addy and Sarah might be young but they exprience a lot of racism in this book such as being treated badly by a pharamist, Addy has become friends with M'dear who lives in the boarding house Addy and her parents live in, though blind Addy learns a lot from her and convices Addy to pick a special day for her birthday as like many children born into slavery she doesn't know it. Addy can't decide but at the end of the book the civil war finally comes to an end and Addy has found the perfect date for her birthday. Love this book as it shows what life was like in the late 1800's for black people in america even when they were free, Addy is such a likeable character, love Addy's books.
