Editorial Reviews
Blumhouse (Split, Get Out, Whiplash) produces this original and inventive rewinding thriller in which a blissfully self-centered co-ed (Jessica Rothe, La La Land) is doomed to relive the day of her murder unless she can identify her masked assailant and hopefully stop the madness. If she can't, she will be stuck in an insane loop, reliving a ghoulish nightmare that has become her death day.

It's a slasher flick, only it's very tongue-in-cheek and self-aware and very funny. It's a take on the time loop conceit. It's as if Groundhog Day and D.O.A. got drunk, messed around, and had a baby.
Really big ups to lead actress, Jessica Rothe, who takes an insufferable character and renders her sympathetic and rootable. She plays Tree Gelbman, one of those mean popular girls we seem to always run into in those high school or college flicks. At Bayfield U, she's so horrible to everyone. She just threw shade at a guy she recently dated: "I mean, who takes their first date to Subway? It's not like you had a footlong." So mean! But I laughed very hard. Just last night, Tree got boozed up, cavorted on a table, instigated two fights, and barfed mightily.
Next day. September 18, a Monday, would turn out to be the longest day in Tree's life. Day starts with her waking up in a stranger's dorm room. Day ends with her getting brutally murdered! And it happens on her birthday.
But then Tree wakes up the next day, only to find she's reliving the same day. And she keeps waking up to this same day. And no matter how much she changes the beats and patterns of that day, it still ends with her getting murdered. Over and over again. Sometimes, there's nothing more scary than a baby in a hoodie.
I suspected I was in for a good time from when they messed around with the Universal Pictures logo at the opening. No, Happy Death Day isn't your baseline horror flick. It's smart and inventive. It packs in sly humor but never allows it to get in the way of telling a decent thriller. For the gorehounds, this may disappoint as it's PG-13 and while there are scary jolts and some very nasty kills, it's not that gory and grotesque. Most times, the camera cuts away before we see the actual kill. However, the chase sequences are blocked to make them as pulse-pounding as possible. Going into the movie, I had a notion that maybe I'd get tired of the MC getting killed over and over and over. But there's enough variety in how she repeatedly gets her ticket punched that it never got old.
The terrific Rothe is supported by a solid young cast. I'd never heard of any of them, but none of them bring the movie down. I liked Rothe's chemistry with Israel Broussard who plays Carter. Carter seems like such a good dude he right away became my number one suspect. But Broussard and Rothe are sweet together.
This paragraph is probably spoilery so feel free to skip ahead. I really liked the twist of Rothe's previous "rewind" days exacting a cumulative physical toll on her body. All the damage she'd accrued makes her progressively weaker each time she revives. There IS a point of no return. No choice for Tree but to turn detective and unmask her killer.
There was an idea... to bring together a group of remarkable time loop films... If Kevin Feige were to quit Marvel, maybe he can launch a new shared universe. Imagine if Happy Death Day were part of a shared universe that comprised the likes of Edge of Tomorrow, Source Code, Run Lola Run, Salvage, 12:01, the "Monday" episode from X-Files, and, yes, Groundhog Day. I don't know how that'll work because it's for damn sure a wiggy concept, but I call it the Déjà Vu universe.
One more possibly spoilery thing. I did figure out whodunit. The clue that gave it away is in the car chase sequence.
They first twist was a bit of a let down, I won't spoil it, but there was a reason for it.
There is opportunity to figure out who the killer is if you know what to look for.
I am able to forgive a couple of plot holes and time loop continuity issues due to the freshness of a horror movie that does not take itself too seriously. I love this little gem and recommend it liberally to friends. Especially friends that are not really into horror films.
The protagonist dies in some interesting ways. At one point she gets pulled over by a cop. She tells him she takes drugs saying, "I do all that!" hoping that once she is in jail she will be safe from her murderer. That didn't work for her (or the cop). As the movie progresses all these deaths start to take a toll on her body. She needs to find her killer before she dies for good. Nice twist at the end.
(On a side note, people who smile are prettier. At the beginning of the movie Jessica Rothe plays a disgruntled, hateful college coed. (You know the type.) She certainly was not attractive. I was thinking, "Couldn't they have found a pretty actress to play the part?" As the movie progresses she (surprisingly) becomes happier and starts smiling. It turns out Jessica Rothe is quite pretty.)
The lead, Theresa or "Tree" is played by relative unknown Jessica Rothe, and her performance is the only thing other than the pitch that saves this movie from being unwatchable. While her role demands that she slowly turn from college Plastic to a more balanced character, Rothe gives us a sense of depth in the early scenes that makes it much more believable when she acknowledges her foibles.
It's pitched as a horror movie, but it's not that frightening; there's little at stake when your victim wakes up screaming after each stabbing, bludgeoning, conflagration, etc. The movie takes one scene to address this, having Tree end up in the hospital early in her umpteenth loop due to inexplicable trauma, and the doctor hints that she might not actually have "infinite lives". But this decent turn of the screw is robbed of whatever dramatic power it might have; no tight time frame can be given (perhaps the writers are in a corner on that one-doc can't very vell give a prognosis on multiple fatalities), and this problem isn't mentioned again throughout the remainder of the film's run-time.
The villain, a shadowy figure wearing a grotesque baby mask, is definitely creepy in the early scenes, but he loses his edge as we're exposed to his eerie visage frequently, and the heroine herself grows unafraid of him well-before the film has reached its climax.
I wouldn't recommend Happy Death Day under most circumstances; if you've had a few drinks and can't commit to a Silence of the Lambs, then it's entertaining enough, but I wouldn't pay even rental for it now. I really hope Ms. Rothe finds better work, she has talent.

I had to buy the DVD after watching this on TV.
I nearly gave this a miss because i avoid comedies and this was classed as comedy & slasher but i had to try it based on the unexpected reviews.
It isn't silly comedy, it's realistic life comedy and with a fantastic storyline that stays grounded, it's in the genre of movies like Final Destination. This movie knows what it's doing.
Excellent lead cast and acting. Perfect direction.
This had me gripped from start to finish.
Some excellent death scenes and funny real life like vocabulary.
Super twist at the end but always expect the unexpected.
But I very much enjoyed this film. Yes it did make me jump occasionally, but you can see it coming and hiding behind your fingers helps a lot! A nice little relationship develops, and the hard, mean young lady turns out all right in the end. Clever twist when you think it's all over. As you go round the same day for the 3rd & 4th time (etc.) you get drawn in and it's fascinating - compulsive watching.
Well worth seeing. Cert. 15 is about right - it's scary. Will keep it and watch it with a friend in 12 months.
