Put On Your Happy Feet
In the great nation of the Emperor penguins, you’re nobody if you can’t sing. That’s a real problem for little Mumble, because not only can’t he sing, but he dances — something no self-respecting penguin would do. Cast out from the colony, Mumble sets off across the vast Antarctic to prove that being true to yourself can make all the difference in the world. Happy Feet is a feel-good kids movie with an important message for all ages.
Brittany Murphy, Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman, and Robin Williams all did their own singing in the movie.
The dancers in the film were sent to 'penguin school' to learn the birds’ characteristic movements.
Mumble has a shadow under his chin and black spots on his feet to suggest the bow tie and spats often worn by dancer Fred Astaire in his early films.
Mumble’s parents, Norma Jean and Memphis, were named for and patterned after Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley.
Happy Feet was the first Animated Feature Film Oscar winner to also use live-action non-animated elements.

Meet the Characters
Mumble (voiced by Elijah Wood)
Unlike the other penguins, little Mumble has a terrible singing voice and no heartsong. But when it comes to dancing, he’s king of the colony.
Gloria (voiced by Brittany Murphy)
Gloria and Mumble have a connection from the moment they’re both hatched. But can she grow to love him in spite of his strange hippity-hop ways?
Lovelace (voiced by Robin Williams)
Lovelace the guru is a revered, crazy-feathered Rockhopper penguin. For the price of one pebble, he will answer any of life’s questions.
Memphis (voiced by Hugh Jackman)
Memphis is very concerned about his son’s strange habits, and worries that it may be his own fault for dropping the egg during incubation.
Elijah Wood, Robin Williams, Brittany Murphy, and Hugh Jackman provide the voices in the animated kids movie, Happy Feet. This is the story of a little penguin named Mumble who has a terrible singing voice and later discovers he has no Heartsong. However, Mumble has an astute talent for something that none of the penguins had ever seen before: tap dancing. Though Mumble's mom, Norma Jean, thinks this little habit is cute, his dad, Memphis, says it 'just ain't penguin'. Besides, they both know that, without a Heartsong, Mumble may never find true love. As fate would have it, his one friend, Gloria, happens to be the best singer around. Mumble and Gloria have a connection from the moment they hatch, but she struggles with his strange 'hippity-hoppity' ways. Mumble is just too different--especially for Noah the Elder, the stern leader of Emperor Land, who ultimately casts him out of the community. Away from home for the first time, Mumble meets a posse of decidedly un-Emperor-like penguins--the Adelie Amigos. Led by Ramon, the Adelies instantly embrace Mumble's cool dance moves and invite him to party with...
There are two new animated sequences on the DVD, which aren't incorporated into the film. One's a half-minute hackysack-themed bit, but the other is a good-looking, two-minute scene featuring the late Steve Irwin as an albatross, who, with Mumble, encounters a blue whale. "Dance Like a Penguin: Stomp to the Beat" is hosted by Savion Glover, whose dancing was motion-captured for the film, but other than a couple basic tips, it's pretty much a demonstration rather than a lesson. In addition to the two music videos (Gia's "Hit Me Up" and Prince's "The Song of the Heart"), "I Love to Singa" is an appropriately matched 1936 Merrie Melodies cartoon in which a young owl ruffles feathers by wanting to sing jazz for his classical-music-loving family. --David HoriuchiSee all Editorial Reviews
