Editorial Reviews

Legendary jazz vocalist Jo Stafford sings you all the way from Thanksgiving through Christmas (and even on into Valentines Day) on this remastered album from 1955. The singer is backed up by the orchestra of Paul Weston, as well as by The Starlighters.

Please note that this review relates to the realease titled "Happy Jolidays / I love the winter winter weather" and not to the budget release "Happy holidays" that contains fewer tracks.

I see what some earlier reviewers have written, not always liking the resequencing of the tracks from the two LP's that make up this collection. As I normally prefer to keep Christmas music separate from other music, I had my doubts when I bought it - an essential purchase for me, as a huge fan of Jo's music. I needn't have worried - all the songs here are ideal for the Christmas season.

The non-Christmas songs about warmth, winter, moonlight and suchlike are masterpieces which sit comfortably alongside the standard Christmas songs. Baby it's cold outside has actually become commonplace on Christmas albums, even though it was never intended to be a Christmas song. I have heard many versions of this song, including the modern duet by Tom Jones and Cerys Matthews, as well as other duets starring Maggie Whiting, Dinah Shore and Petula. Jo's magnificent rendition (with the Starlighters) is as good as any of them. Maggie's version is (just) my favorite, but they are all lovely.

The Starlighters sing Hanover winter song without Jo - no doubt this was Jo's way of thanking them, allowing them the chance to show what they could do, but I would have preferred Jo to join in. Still, there's plenty of other tracks here and the Starlighters certainly give Jo great backing on these.

Jo's lovely, warm voice is well suited to these songs, which contain mostly familiar songs to appeal to casual buyers, while including just enough obscure stuff to appeal to Christmas music fans. The nature of this album, with it's unusual mix of songs, means that it's always one of the first Christmas CD's I listen to as the season comes round - it gets you into Christmas gradually.

Jo was a very special singer, as you will realise when listening to this wonderful CD.

I grew up listening to Jo Stafford's album"Ski Trails". This CD is a wonderful blend of winter songs from that collection as well as some holiday songs. If you enjoy Ms. Stafford's husky voice singing melodies that will have you thinking of New England, snow, a roaring fire and happy memories, then this is a must for you.

I've been waiting for "Ski Trails" to come out on CD ever since finding it on vinyl eight years ago, and what a pleasant surprise to discover even MORE holiday songs included here. This album is to Christmas music what "It's A Wonderful Life" is to Christmas movies -- quintessential. Adjectives that come to mind are: Romantic, jovial, sentimental, joyful, and SWINGING! Hearing "Babes in Toyland" and "Night Before Christmas" will evoke your best childhood memories, and Stafford's rendition of "Moonlight in Vermont" is easily the best version ever recorded. Most importantly, this isn't one of those Christmas albums you'll listen to each December and then put in storage. The selections from the original "Ski Trails" record are timeless standards appropriate for the WHOLE season. After the 25th, just program your CD player to skip the Christmas-specific titles and keep listening throughout the New Year!

Two great Jo Stafford albums done with her husband Paul Weston and released by Columbia; "Happy Holiday" in 1955 & "Ski Trails" in 1956. The sound is excellent, and the Weston website verifies that the digital remastering was done using the original studio master tapes. Jo Stafford's voice was never better than at this point in her career.

"Happy Holiday" is a respectable set of Christmas/winter songs, done originally as a "suite" where each song segues into the next without the usual silence between tracks. This CD does not preserve that mix, so, for example, the chiming bells that connect "The Christmas Song" & "Let It Snow" are missing.

"Ski Trails" is a far superior album (minus the two recycled tracks from "Happy Holiday"), and in my opinion, the real reason to get this CD. Specifically, the version of "The Whiffenpoof Song" performed a cappella by Jo Stafford & The Norman Luboff Choir is sure to give you chills. Seriously. Other standouts are "Moonlight In Vermont", "It Happened In Sun Valley" & the truly brilliant "By The Fireside." (Jo's version of "June In January" is very nice, but can't compare to the superb version by Julie London on her "Calendar Girl" album, also released in 1956.)

This CD contains all of the tracks found on both of those Columbia LPs, however the track order has been--according to the Weston website--"re-sequenced to provide an entirely new listening experience." The original LP track listings are as follows:

"Happy Holiday"

Side A
1. Happy Holiday
2. Winter Weather
3. The Christmas Song
4. Let It Snow!*
5. Toyland
6. March Of The Toys

Side B
1. Jingle Bells/Winter Wonderland*
2. 'Twas The Night Before Christmas
3. I Wonder As I Wander
4.

If Barbra's voice is like "buttah", then Jo's is pure honey. I found the album, "Ski Trails", in a free bin at my local library 10 years ago and it's been among my most treasured records ever since. I happen to love winter music, and this is IT! Alas, when I tried to locate it on CD, "Ski Trails" was nowhere to be found. Finally, I found this album sandwiched together with Jo's holiday recordings and I was elated. There is no other album that warms my heart like this one, during the holidays or simply during the long winter. Absolute gems are "Moonlight in Vermont" (you won't find a better version anywhere), "The Nearness of You", "It Happened in Sun Valley", "Winter Weather", "Let it Snow" and "Winter Wonderland". Oh, but they're all good. Jo's holiday songs are as essential as "White Christmas" by Bing. This is the one album to play with a gathering of your loved ones, or alone by the fireside with a glass of lovely port, watching the snowfall. You can bet that's what I'll be doing every winter for the rest of my life, as this album is ingrained in my heart and represents everything good about the holiday season, and beyond.
