The kettle support is to be put inside the warmer with the circle at the bottom and the three pillars at the top. You might wonder why it is necessary. The reason is the warmer is not supposed to be used with the grate on top of it (more about it later). A tea light is to be put in the middle of the circle.
The grate is better set aside to be used as a cast iron coaster because if you put it on top of the warmer, it will make the kettle base too far from the heat that comes from the tea light at the bottom, and you would end up wondering if you need multiple candles to the tea warm. And you will also lose heat through the side holes of the grate. (Please see the pictures I uploaded.) Using the grate is only necessary to be used on top of the warmer when you need a flat surface for certain flat-base kettles.
Without the grate on the warmer, the round kettle base can nest down a little bit into the warmer and keep the heat from being wasted. If your kettle is small, the kettle support pillars will keep it supported, keeping a reasonable distance from the tea light (now you know what the kettle support is for). In this position I can keep the tea at the perfect sipping temperature.
I've also tried this warmer with Sterno canned heat, but it keeps the tea too hot to drink. If you want to keep the tea very hot, you can use a Sterno can with the grate on the warmer.
One star is deducted for having no instruction for how to use the warmer and the functions of the pieces. I had to figure that out from experience. Hope this helps! Again, please check out my uploaded picture for visual illustration.
The base is stable and solid. Plain, but functional. Unit does not get hot when candle is lit so you can easily move it around without burning yourself.
Still have it and still love it
I was just reading "What was I thinking" review and sounds like they thought the tealight was supposed to heat up a cold pot. This warmer is used to maintain the heat. I heat my teapot w hot water first - then dump it just before adding the hot water and tea. Then you maintain the heat w the tealight/warmer.
My positive comments echo many of the other reviewers of this item, and I summarize the benefits here:
1. This cast iron warmer is sturdy and can hold a wide range of teapots as the top is flat.
2. The warmer can hold multiple tea-light sized candles, or a short votive type candle, allowing you to match your warming needs.
3. The top iron grate can be used independently as a trivet.
4. Enameled iron can easily be wiped clean.
5. Can also be used as a warmer for small metal or ceramic plates, for dishes such as tapas or fondue.
