Editorial Reviews

"When looking through history books, it's clear that there is more to Texas in 1895 than just cowboys. Author Hebby Roman taps in to the railroad as the focal point of A HARD CANDY CHRISTMAS. Abigail Kerr Sanford is the daughter of a railroad man, forced to live somewhat of a life of servitude because of her past. When the new sheriff seeks a room at her father's boarding house, Abby's life is turned upside down. Clint Graham is a rancher who gets pushed into the sheriff's role in the midst of an argument between the ranchers and the railroad representatives. He's got a difficult past he is trying to bury. There's some definite chemistry between Clint and Abby, but no easy road to happiness. This sweet romance provides a perfect opportunity to highlight the early railroad years when safety was still very much an issue for the workers. Rich and full of details, this is a poignant story about two people seeking happiness in the aftermath of heartbreak." FIVE STARS TOP PICK AT THE ROMANCE REVIEWS

"A sweet romance in the historical timeframe of feuding railroaders and ranchers. The plot has action, emotion, and compelling characters. The scenes with Clint, Abigail, and her son are touching moments in the story. An adorable holiday read where you'll be hooked from the first page."  4 Stars  Still Moments Magazine  2015 FINALIST BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR

"A Hard Candy Christmas by Hebby Roman is about leaving the ghosts of the past behind and opening one's heart to new beginnings, a second chance at happiness through trust and respect. Ms. Roman brings the "olden days" to life, with a realistic standoff between the railroad and the ranchers, and two people who find each other just when they needed love most. A delightful read, heart-warming scenes and the emotional passions of the Holiday Season." From the Author

"A Hard Candy Christmas" is a story that's very close to my heart. I set it in my hometown of Del Rio, Texas, and I've included railroaders along with sheep ranchers because the railroad in the early days ofDel Rio was a huge boost to the local economy.
My father was a railroad engineer in Del Rio when I wasgrowing up, and our life revolved around his train schedules. Another interesting fact about Del Rio is it was originally settled by ranchers, but not cattle ranchers--sheep ranchers. The climate is arid and the soil is poor and mostly grows brush and some prairie grass, so the original ranching families learned they could run more sheep per acre than cattle. My sister married into one of the pioneer families, the Bakers, and I spent several of my summers on their ranch, working sheep on horseback and helping out around the shearing shed.
The story centers ona young single mother, Abigail, whose husband has deserted her. She has an eight-year-old son. They're dependent on her demanding and miserly father, a railroad engineer, who also owns a boardinghouse, which she runs for him. Given her relationship with her husband and her father, Abby has been hurt and is fearful of men. She goes to great lengths to avoid men--until Clint Graham, a sheep rancher and the local sheriff, rents one of her rooms. Even though they're caught between the railroaders and sheep ranchers in a local feud, Abby and Clint learn they have a lot in common. And Clint's steadfast devotion to her son helps to dispel her fears about men. Their romance blossoms, but then Abby's long-absent husband shows up and Clint is called upon to avert a tragedy and save Abby's son.
