And we have great characters to pave the way to a good series. Jenna, an American midwife working in rural Afghanistan, was brave, intelligent, and big-hearted. The daughter of a senator, she’s lived a life of opportunity, but she’s extremely humble and hard working. A nice balance to Jenna was Derek Tower as the hero. He knows Jenna only as his best friend’s little sister and, therefore, feels obligation to protect her when the time comes. He’s a big alpha soldier with a huge heart himself. Having had come from nothing, he doesn’t believe he’s worth much. Instead of coming across insecure, however, he comes across as sacrificing and real. From his perspective, he has no family, no roots, and no education. He carries major hurt and guilt because his best friend (a “somebody”) gave his life for Derek, and so it seemed kismet that Derek would be there to protect his best friend’s sister. No spoilers here, that’s on the book description page.
Both characters were likeable and tough, with strong ethics. This was a perfect set up for adventure and healing. I loved the action scenes. I loved the excitement. There is a lot here to enjoy and devour. I absolutely enjoyed a taste of the other operatives that work for Derek and I would be pleased to enjoy any of their stories – I was especially taken with the super-smart operative Elizabeth, the burly Scottish McManus with the sympathetic heart and quick comprehension, and courageous Malik Jones (who has a cute bromance happening).
For fans of the I-Team series, you absolutely will get glimpses into some favorite characters. Javier (Striking Distance), Holly (I-Team Series) and Nick (Seduction Game) were the most notably present, since they work with Derek now. But you get tiny glimpses of some others as well. This book does work as a stand alone read, if you have not read the I-Team series.
her characters and their chosen professions. This level of detail is interesting, and creates memorable stories that leave you feeling invested in the outcome, and wanting more. In Hard Target, she brings back a familiar character from her I-Team series, Derek Tower. He is asked by a U.S. senator to provide security for his daughter, a midwife volunteering in Afghanistan. The author provides a very realistic view of what this situation would be like for a woman from the U.S. working in a country where women's expertise is undervalued, and the culture and traditions are vastly different. Through the drama, the romance sizzles! I can't give her books enough stars, you will not be disappointed!

As always there is humour and tears and the relationship between the couple was just right.
We worth picking up this book - and seriously if you haven't read any of her other works WHAT PLANET HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING ON??
(Is it just me or do a lot of my Pamela Clare reviews start this way??????)
This is truly a beautiful story. Derek is still Derek but somehow getting into his head changed my opinion of him entirely and I found myself nodding a lot and thinking, oh, right, okay, now I get you. Then I thought, actually, you’re kind of cute. THEN I thought, actually, you are freaking hot!!!!! Once I hit that point I was done for.
I also really enjoyed the heroine, Jenna Hamilton. Pamela Clare has the incredible ability to write women I want to be BFFs with. I like them. I really, really like them, and Jenna is no different – she’s smart, and funny, and loyal, and complicated, and very, very dedicated to her work. And if she’s also a little lonely at times, well, that’s life. These are all qualities I can relate to, and I got lost in the story pretty quickly.
This book has all the things I love, including a ton of suspense, and a twist I never could have predicted. Pamela Clare is an auto-buy for me, and this series has me super excited. Can’t wait to see which member of the Cobra organization is up for book two!
