Read a bit of the first part of this novel and it is evident the lady knows how to write! She has created a Prologue that is at once terrifying and explains the special trait of her main character Xavier revealed in a frightening flash when he was a child. She then moves her story twenty-eight years late and let the plot unwind well – ‘The house was painted an almost garish green, boasting a lace trim and a charming Appalachian style porch. It was reminiscent of a bad Christmas movie but it did not stop him from pausing to stare at it for a long while, debating whether to enter.
A black and white sign on the door read “Tarot, Palm, Astrology and Past Life Readings” accompanied by a depiction of an eyeball in the center of a hand, embraced by a pyramid. It was not an unusual business in the oil town which was a dusty mix of old money and new immigrants but there was something about this particular building which caught his attention. He must have passed the one story structure on South Mirror Street a dozen times over the past weeks but he had yet to see anyone coming or going. Each time, he found himself pausing on the sidewalk to stare, as if he could sense someone inside calling out to him. He turned and continued across the residential street, his long, black overcoat billowing behind him as he strode away. Tomorrow I will go, he told himself, but he had been saying that for weeks. He wondered what it was he was waiting on exactly. He wondered why he had the desire to enter such an establishment at all. It was not exactly the type of business he frequented. In fact, he considered palm readers and fortune tellers little better than circus side show attractions, nothing to be taken seriously and oftentimes simple hustlers. Still, he knew that when the time was right, he would walk through the doors of the small house and the mystery of why he continued to take the long route to work become clear. It was a stifling hot day, not at all strange for east Texas in August but he was dressed in his typical black attire from throat to toe. He had not broken a sweat as he approached the mirrored storefront of his job but he paused to stare at his reflection, almost as if he was surprised it was still there. Staring back at him was the same man he had always known - or at least tried to know. His hair was thick and black, and always looked artfully tousled without any effort on his part; as if he had just stepped off the cover of GQ. Sea green eyes seemed to glitter against the rays of the sun, accented by dark thick lashes. The effect was unnerving against his aquiline nose and strong chiseled jawline..’
The plot synopsis allows entry – ‘Xavier - he can steal the one thing people can’t buy. Danica - con artist extraordinaire. He grew up in a dark place, needing to use a mysterious special ability he developed to protect himself. He soon realized that the same ability could provide…other things for him too. But then Xavier gets into a situation where even his special skills can’t save him. Growing up on the streets taught her to be quick, savvy, and ruthless. Her stunning good looks helped her out of a few tight situations too. Now she's on the run, but she needs to decide if she's running away from Xavier...or toward him?’
For a series opener this is strong work. Keep an eye on this artist. Grady Harp, February 18
Hard Time, the second book in the Hard Series, follows along the same lines as Hard Instincts. With an ALPHA male lead, the willing but flawed woman to love, ans enough suspense to leave the reader hanging on.
Drake couldn't resist going home to see his wife and four sons, but he leads the enemy to them and his wife is killed. A friend splits up the boys and finds them foster families. He doesn't tell Drake where they are so he can't endanger them again. However, he was killed before he could tell Darke where they were.Drake spends the next 28 years unsuccessfully hunting for his sons.
We meet Xavier who is working as security at a brothel. He has a physic talent where he can stop time for two minutes, and he needs to use this skill at times. Xavier seems to be drawn to Danica, who is a con artist. The two pair up, but Oculus is still trying to find the boys and kill them. Who is going to find Zavier first?
This is book 2 in a series about Drake's sons, but it can be read as a standalone. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
I read the book in one sitting, wanting to find out what was next! It's a compelling story and you can pick up the story easily without reading book 1. I can guarantee, though, that you'll want to read book 1 if you missed it. Chloe Fischer's work is seamless; even in a world of supernatural abilities, she makes the improbable possible. It's a wild ride, here, and you'll be wondering how all the pieces will fit together by the end of the book. This series of books touches on the romance, suspense and paranormal genres. Readers of any of these will probably enjoy this book.
I received an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
