About the Author
CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up, she's at the well, hauling buckets.
Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it gave her a big enough ego to try her hand at novels. She’ll tell you all about it out back, where a cord of wood awaits.
If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Meet Vivian Foster ... School librarian with a soft heart and immense inner strength. She is determined and fierce with strong family values. She is the girl next dooron the outside with a sensual kinky layer right underneath. She has a fanatical love for baseball and an inherit reflex to fight for the underdog. She is beautiful both on the inside and out and is about to have her world explode :)
The story of Dash and Vivian is fun. As layer after layer of Dash and Vivian are unfolded in the story, you will smile, you will laugh, you will cringe, you may scream and you will definitely shed a tear or two. But these two polar opposites, on the outside, could not have been better suited for each other. The strength and loyalty in Vivian is exactly what Dash needed to move forward in his life. For so long, his only purpose was baseball. But he didn't live baseball, baseball lived him. The game became a series of rules and routines that became imperative for his survival. It wasn't the love of baseball that drove him to these things, it was the fierce need for the anchor. Vivian changed all of that and he didn't even see it coming.
As their journey unfolds thru the pages, you will feel the shift even before they feel the shift. Because as much as Vivian was becoming Dash's compass and anchor, Dash was becoming Vivian's heart right back! It is THIS that was my ultimate love about this book. And that's all on C.D. Reiss' story-telling skills. She presented an easy feel good story layered with depth and complexity. And she did it flawlessly. Both Dash and Vivian were not only complex, but also easy and light-hearted. It was the perfect combination and it will have you begging for their story not to conclude.
I fell in love with both Vivian and Dash instantly and I'm positive that every future reader will do the same. They were both so captivating in their own ways and really truly were each other's other half. Their story is littered with give and take and perfect harmony with just the right amount of angst. A person like Dash Wallace with not only his rituals but strong belief in those rituals is always going to bring angst into a story. But it's perfect angst. It's pivotal angst. It's life altering angst. And it was phenomenally well presented and dealt with...I have the most incredible contentment and *happy sigh* from HardBall and I will be shouting its praises for a long time to come to anyone who wants to listen :)

Dash Wallace is a master on the diamond due to his single mindedness when it comes to his methods and routines during the season. He's worked incredibly hard to be where he is in his professional baseball career and he's unwilling to risk doing anything that affects his performance. So when Vivian Foster hits his radar and remains in his sights even after she refuses to play things his way, Dash is at war with himself as to the limits he's willing to go in order to get Vivian underneath him without disrupting his routine and usurping his control.
Vivian Foster has lived cautiously for most of her life, never truly experiencing anything reckless or unstructured, so when the man of her baseball dreams shows interest in her and wants to show her how to let go and give in to her reckless desires, she does everything she can to keep her heart out of the equation because a man who sets up his life with expiration dates and planned encounters is not someone she can risk giving her heart to...too bad she never stood a chance, though, because once she realizes who Dash Wallace truly is underneath all that hotness and skill, she can't help but willingly succumb to his advances falling deeper with every dirty text, book discussion, and amazing sexual encounter.
Regardless of how diligent both Dash and Vivian are in maintaining control of their feelings and staying within the confines of their own rules, real relationships cannot be regimented or completely planned out, forcing them both to determine when everything is on the line what defines who they are and what they want most for their lives.
HardBall is not C.D. Reiss' typical storyline, which showcases her ability to diversify her writing while maintaining complex characters and a rich and entertaining plot. Because readers are privy to both Dash and Vivian's perspectives, we are truly able to understand what each of them is risking by giving into their desires for one another and the potential hazards to what has defined them for much of their adult life. Dash is quite the dirty talker, but there's also a depth to him that we are able to witness as well and I have to say that because I know what it's like to live with someone with ADD, it makes perfect sense to me why Dash tries to live his life as structured and planned out as he can and the complications that can prove disastrous if control and routine is turned upside down. But, sometimes, going off the rails and feeling off balance due to an overload of emotions can actual head a person in a direction that ultimately is better than the one previously established.

4.5 Poison Apples
My main problem with the book is that I felt ambivalent about the hero and heroine. Although I understood that Dash's had ADHD I didn't like reading his thoughts when they were long, run on sentences. Also I did not like the way he treated Vivian. He treated her poorly at times and being a doormat she allowed him to. She gave and he took. She pampered him, seeming to make the majority of compromises in the relationship and ran herself ragged in an attempt to appease him.
Also for Dash to break up with Vivian so he could go have smex with OW was a scummy thing to do especially when he intended to do it all along despite telling her Vivian that he would give them a chance. While I am glad that Dash did not follow through with his plan to smex with the OW he got too close to getting physical for my comfort. He saw the OW naked and spread eagle, got turned on and was in the process of removing his clothes when he got cold feet. It annoyed me how the heroine forgave him so quickly. The only thing he had to do was show up a few times and she was immediately back to having smex with him. So disappointed. Also the ending was mediocre, a type of HFN that I didn't trust because I didn't trust him.
