About the Author

CD Reiss is a USA Today bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up, she's at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it gave her a big enough ego to try her hand at novels. She’ll tell you all about it in the back, where a cord of wood awaits.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

HardBall by CD Reiss is a charming, sweet contemporary sports romance with some heat. I love the combination of sweet and spicy, and Reiss’ has balanced the two for the perfect game…I mean book.

I fell in love with Reiss’ characters; they are lovable, realistic, and totally relatable. Vivian is an elementary school librarian with a generous heart and a penchant for baseball. She and her fabulous stepdad are ardent Dodgers fans. He is a generous, kind man who is the perfect male role model. His relationship with Vivian is enviably loving and supportive.

When Vivian meets Dashiel Wallace during a school field trip, both their lives are turned upside down. Dash is the elusive, reclusive star shortstop for the Dodgers. He is the quintessential studly athlete. I swooned over Reiss’ descriptions of Dash ‘s athletic prowess and features. Dash, #19, is easy on the eyes, but there is so much more to him. A guy with Dash’s swagger who talks about books and can quote classic literature will undo me every time! What made Dash absolutely delicious was not his seeming perfection, but all his foibles. Reiss’ characterization of this man hit home with me.

HardBall is a pitching dual. It’s all about skill and strategy. The plot is well paced, and Reiss doesn’t rush the layered development of characters and relationships. Reiss did not shy away from showing her characters inner demons and struggles—whether they eventually overcome them or not. The story dynamics and chemistry between all the characters is engaging. Reiss’ always makes me care deeply about her characters; she has also filled my fictional little black book with delightful book boyfriends.

Dash Wallace is the star shortstop for the LA Dodgers, multi-time MVP and Golden Glove winner and is now hot on the heels of librarian to the underprivileged. Oh, and he’s perfect. Like P.E.R.F.E.C.T.

Told from both Viv’s and Dash’s point of view, we get the inside look into both of these characters. And what I loved the most about that shift in perspectives – that we get them at the right moments. We get the most impact from each scene and this is something that for me has always stood out for me when it comes to Christine’s writing. It’s purposeful. If you need to be in that character’s shoes to feel the full impact of that moment, that is where you are going to be.

I am going to really try to not include any or a million baseball puns, I really am. I might fail. But oh, well. That’s life right? So, back to this book and the yummy goodness that was found overflowing from the pages.

Hardball is a contemporary sports romance, but don’t worry my kinky friends, because Dash is not vanilla at all. This particular story sort of had two parts, maybe even three. So I am going to try to capture my reactions to those particular parts and stay away from the story aspects, which is best for you all to experience firsthand.

Dash had some battles of his own to overcome and I loved that these weren’t swept under the rug or over explained. We got to experience them. It was honest, brutally. Dash didn’t have the benefit of disclosure, he had to cope and he had to deal. And I loved that as a reader, I was tossed right in, forced to get my bearings. It made me feel that much closer to Dash in the end. I loved that it felt chaotic at times because I was able to enjoy the peaceful times that much more. I was able to see the highs, lows, fast and slows all in real time.

Vivian is just a regular girl, she works as a librarian at an elementary school. She is actually working when she meets Dash Wallace, the famous short stop player. Vivian and her father are huge baseball fans, so she is very excited to meet the team as part of a field trip.

Dash lives his life following these small superstitious. Every decision he makes follows a strict routine, he is terrified of upsetting the balance in his life. When circumstances bring Dash and Vivian back together he finds it hard to just let her go, but he can’t really offer her more or it would throw off his carefully balanced routine.

Vivian and Dash are such a great couple because they both grow with each other and I love that in stories. Naturally this book is plenty hot and sexy like all of Reiss’s books. I literally enjoyed every word and moment between Dash and Vivian. Their connection was fun, sexy and addictive.

What truly blew my mind and really just amazed me was how well Dash was written. Dash suffers from ADHD and I swear reading his parts I could really see and feel this, I could imagine his struggles and really empathize with him. To me Reiss just took writing the male POV to the next level.

We all know Reiss can deliver sexy, suspenseful and beautifully written stories, but I just love it when she writes these fun sexy reads. Hardball is definitely one of my favorite sports romance books.

As much as I wanted to love this book, I have to admit that it was just "ok". I'm not exactly sure why, but I had an extremely hard time getting into the story & an even harder time connecting with the characters. They just didn't feel believable to me. Will this stop me from reading another of CD's books? Not all all. But this one missed the mark for me.
