As sad as it sounds, this was one of the first and only Greek films I'd ever seen. I caught it on TV and was absolutely blown away from start to finish. Don't be deceived by the cheesy, soft-core porno looking cover. This film is about as gritty as it gets. Up there in one of my fave all-time films, it deals with the underbelly of Athens. Underage street prostitutes, the drug culture, and the violence associated with the 'darker' side of Athens. The cinematography is exceptional - dark, moody and experimental in places. Brilliant film, a true foreign gem that unfortunately has been lost in the mainstream. A MUST SEE!!!

Here I review the Strand DVD release "Hardcore" (2005).

THE FILM:

I'd like to say at the outset: if this is the state of Greek filmmaking in the early oughts, we will all be poorer if the Greek economy collapses. "Hardcore," despite its unfortunate and inappropriate title, is a work of cinematic art, easily on a par with or surpassing Scorsese's "Taxi Driver."

Most synopses you will read will mention two girls who are prostitutes and experience the violent underworld life in Athens. Most synopses you read will be wrong, wrong, wrong. They have mistaken setting for theme, and they have stopped watching halfway through. The real theme here is, can you continue to love someone no matter what? And what if, "no matter what" includes finding out they never loved you to begin with?

Such is the dilemma Martha faces, and despite what you read elsewhere, her work with Nadia for the brothel is businesslike and boring. Yes, violence does eventually erupt, but it is due to character conflict, is part of THIS story, and not reflective (as other reviewers have suggested) of Greek life in general.

Having endured their life of prostitution together, and broken free, Martha and Nadia find themselves with the film barely half over. Saying "this is a film about Greek prostitutes" is like saying "The Wizard of Oz is a film about a tornado."

Ambitious Nadia ascends. Doting Martha treads water, and dotes. Not surprisingly, their love becomes strained. But there's more: Nadia is not merely ambitious. She's also kinda psycho. And Martha, whose voiceover narration explains everything in retrospect, is given to flights of fancy. These twin characteristics enable director Dennis Iliadis to keep us on our feet, as well as on the edge of our seats.

was indeed pretty hardcore, not in the pornographic sense obviously... but how wild, isolated at times and how caught up these people are in the underworld of athens, and no doubt similar in other european countries like greece...

woould very much recommend the movie to anyone with an interest in abstract..and identities.

I love this movie, it's one of my all time favorites. I actually forgot I bought this here, I'd bought it in 2009 I think, and I still actually have it. As other reviews have stated, it's not really pornographic, I'd interpreted it more as a love story and how you cope with being in love with a narcissist. There are a lot of violent scenes however, so if you're squeamish maybe it's not for you. I'm not squeamish in the least bit and was able to look past all of this and enjoy the real story beneath it all.

I have watched the movie twice. I have to say that in the first pass you always run the risk of focusing on the xxx scenes. It is true that the the actresses are very beautiful and young and they can easily distract you from the deeper beauty of this film. First of all I think that the casting is perfect and the actors are very convincing and really get into their roles. I have hard time to believe that these things (movie plot) can be real in Greece, but I can be wrong. In any event the plot is not really the strong point of the movie. I think the dynamic between the characters is the most interesting part. Also the director seems to have done very good job, introducing some surrealism and fuzziness in some scenes. He is very blunt at throwing violent scenes, but he doesn't loose the measure. I am particularly sensitive to violence and I didn't feel uncomfortable. The choice of the soundtrack blends very well with the movie. On the negative aspects, I think the movie could have been a little bit shorter, although I didn't feel bored.

Overall I think it was a pioneering movie for the greek standards. Congratulations to the director and to the actors who found the courage, the inspiration and the power to blend sex, violence and strong emotions tocreate an interesting result. I highly recommend this movie if you are bored with mainstream, it will stimulate several conflicting centers of your brain.

Hardcore was a visually appealing, thought-provoking movie. However, elements of the storyline as well as some of the overall execution seemed somewhat amateurish. It's definitely worth a watch, though, and I would be curious about this director's future (perhaps more mature) work.

I would like to know if Prostitution is legal in Greece. Here are two under age young ladies, one started at 14, the other at 15 and during the time frame of the movie, they were 15 and 16. Both hate what they are doing but are using the only thing they have to earn a living, their bodies. They both dislike what they are doing but the only the younger girl has a plan. The older girl follows along but as she becomes more in love with her friend, she hates the fact that her friend is simply sleeping her way up the ladder. Not this is anything new, it has been happening for centuries. Not that I'm that this is totally wrong, they are using what assets they have to get ahead just like men do. Only their product is better. I'm not justifying the contents of the movie, but reality is what it is. Unless you speak or understand Greek, the movie is a little hard to follow. It does have some disturbing scenes like the one in the training room where the pimp is greasing up dildo during the training of a new recruit. It is also disturbing in the fact of the exportation of these young women are preyed upon by perverted men. It was a nice movie, not for everyone.
