I'd like to say at the outset: if this is the state of Greek filmmaking in the early oughts, we will all be poorer if the Greek economy collapses. "Hardcore," despite its unfortunate and inappropriate title, is a work of cinematic art, easily on a par with or surpassing Scorsese's "Taxi Driver."
Most synopses you will read will mention two girls who are prostitutes and experience the violent underworld life in Athens. Most synopses you read will be wrong, wrong, wrong. They have mistaken setting for theme, and they have stopped watching halfway through. The real theme here is, can you continue to love someone no matter what? And what if, "no matter what" includes finding out they never loved you to begin with?
Such is the dilemma Martha faces, and despite what you read elsewhere, her work with Nadia for the brothel is businesslike and boring. Yes, violence does eventually erupt, but it is due to character conflict, is part of THIS story, and not reflective (as other reviewers have suggested) of Greek life in general.
Having endured their life of prostitution together, and broken free, Martha and Nadia find themselves with the film barely half over. Saying "this is a film about Greek prostitutes" is like saying "The Wizard of Oz is a film about a tornado."
Ambitious Nadia ascends. Doting Martha treads water, and dotes. Not surprisingly, their love becomes strained. But there's more: Nadia is not merely ambitious. She's also kinda psycho. And Martha, whose voiceover narration explains everything in retrospect, is given to flights of fancy. These twin characteristics enable director Dennis Iliadis to keep us on our feet, as well as on the edge of our seats.Read more ›
woould very much recommend the movie to anyone with an interest in abstract..and identities.
Overall I think it was a pioneering movie for the greek standards. Congratulations to the director and to the actors who found the courage, the inspiration and the power to blend sex, violence and strong emotions tocreate an interesting result. I highly recommend this movie if you are bored with mainstream, it will stimulate several conflicting centers of your brain.

Movie Sucks. I must admit I did not last over 20 minutes. If it gets better I could not sit that long.Published 14 months ago by SR

Well worth the watch. Gritty theme, but nice character and plot development, superior cinematography and soundtrack; acting was strong. Read morePublished on May 17, 2014 by Joe Bravo
Sub titles, old fashioned boring. Not sexy, not exciting, not even interesting for that matter ... Go with Wild Orchid or some other movie this one sucks.Published on August 9, 2013 by D. Sanders
I watched the rated-R version of this film; perhaps it was edited in a way that made the story virtually incomprehensible? Read morePublished on September 18, 2012 by ReCynd
This movie kept my attention. It was a good movie. The ending was a complete surprise. Be ready for sex, drugs, and violence. It's dark, edgy, and interesting.Published on September 15, 2012 by Stacey aka Coffey Brown
