What you get is a very small (a tad bigger than a match box) plastic unit with a long wire. You wrap the wire around your spark plug lead, and stick the end of the wire into this device. It uses induction to pick up the spark. You CAN cut the wire shorter, I cut mine in half and it works fine. The display shows either total hours, or current RPM. By holding the button down you can also view total number of engine starts, and/or peak RPM. You can reset the peak RPM value, I'm not sure if you can reset total starts. Basically it does what it says, and does it well, there's not much more to say. I've had several different models of these hour meters made by SenDEC, the same company that makes this one, and over the past several years they have all been great. The "log book" they advertise is just a few sheets of paper, it doesn't describe the device itself. This one does NOT have the feature that blinks at you when maintenance is due, unfortunately; but the features that it does have do work as-advertised. This particular model I have installed on an outboard boat motor. It gets very hot under the hood so we'll see how long the battery lasts (the unit under the hood of my other outboard has lasted several years now in the S. FL sun, and is still going), but with only 15.7 hours on this one so far it's working great. I do recommend this model if it has the features that you need.

I purchased another Hour/Tach model as i just picked up a new bike. My last Hardline Products meter worked flawless for 4 years. The Tach function did not work so i called the company and they were more than great in service. I explained to them what the problem was and without blinking an eye they sent another meter out. They told me to keep the other meter and put it on my lawnmower. Two days later i have my new meter in hand and works perfect.

Great unit with a company that backs their product without question...answers the phone and does what they said they were going to do.. .Grade A win in my book!!

I've purchased two of these. One to use on a generator, the other on a scooter. Both installations went easy. There really is only one wire to wrap around the spark plug wire and you are good to go. Can be adjusted for 2 and 4 stroke engines with different spark profiles. You also get a MAX RPM memory, and Engine Run Time counter. RPMs seem to update about every second. Device auto shuts off when the engine is turned off. You can access the Run Time and RPM memory while the engine is off. Instructions state that the Run Time counter is NOT re-settable, so once it starts ticking, it just keeps going. The battery in this device is NOT replaceable, and the vendor states it has about a 10 year life. So keep in mind that this is eventually a throw away device. This is probably done to weatherproof the unit, as the entire thing is sealed up tight. I would not expect any issues with this being exposed to water/rain.

This is the second one I bought for two different boats. One was a 25HP Mercury 4 stroke outboard (2001), and the second a Yamaha 40HP two stroke from 1997.
Because I wanted to mount the tach in my center console I had to extend the wire.
On my first application (the Mercury) I had some intermittent problems as the tach notoriously read lower RPMs. I did talk to customer support and they were very helpful, but unfortunately could not figure out the reason either. I changed the wire gauges and tried other things.
What strangely worked when the tach read lower RPMs was to touch it with one hand. When doing that, it jumped right back up to the right reading. I was ok with that as I just needed to validate RPMs when using different propellers.
For another strange reason, the issue started to happen less frequently and pretty much went away after a few months. I had not changed anything.

The second application (the Yamaha) went flawlessly and the tach works great.

I did test-out another product (quite a bit cheaper) and when it arrived it had a big sticker on the top (Made in China). I should have not even opened it, but I was curious. The tach actually worked for low RPMs, but went blank for anything above about 2000RPM. Needless to say it sent it back (thanks Amazon) and ordered this proven product.

Great customer service (both Amazon and Hardline) and a good product. There are competitive products that most likely work as well, but they are all more money.

I used this for tuning my Stihl chainsaw. It's very responsive. It takes definitely less than a second to updated the reading.

This is an easy to install hour meter. Perhaps a bit overpriced, but it does what it's supposed to do. It is alot smaller than I expected, maybe 2" wide, which gives you many placement options.

I wanted to get a cheap tachometer for setting the idle speed on my new to me 97 Harley Sportster as well as mounting it for a week or so to see the rpm at various speeds. Since this would not be a permanent installation I was not worried about the look of the meter or the hour totalizator function. After researching several options I went with this tachometer mainly because "This hour meter works on all gasoline engines including newer FI bikes; it has adjustable RPM input for dual or single spark ignition systems".

Now here's the problem. On the manufacturers website they have the following statement:
"Suitable for all single and twin, two or four cycle gasoline engines operation within specified tachometer firing pattern."

Since the Harley is a dual spark (wasted spark) system and is not symmetrical (i.e. 45 degrees apart) the tachometer does not work well. At low rpm, between 1000 and 3000 the tach is pretty close. Above 3500 the measurement is incorrect and even shows rpms that are above the ignition modules rpm limit. This is due to the non-symmetrical firing not the dual spark. Changing the input range did not correct the problem either. In 1 pulse for 1 revolution mode the low rpms were correct but the upper were significantly off. In 2 pulse per revolution the high rpm seemed to be closer but the low was significantly off.

Despite the problems with the tachometer the hour meter works correctly. Also, Hardline Products is very responsive when communicating through email.

Bottom line... if you have a symmetrical engine or are mainly interested in the hour meter functionality this meter works well, is easy to mount, and not bad looking.
