I have looked at over 100 electric kettles over the last year. ALL of them have plastic which comes into contact with the hot water, or are designed poorly (prone to burning you, etc).

This kettle has a single plastic semi-cover for the spout exhaust, but it is EASILY REMOVED and completely unnecessary. If you choose to leave it on, it does not come in contact with the heated water. That makes this Kettle the otherwise legendary Unicorn kettle and I am very happy with it.

The kettle automatically turns off when the water is boiling. The cord coils neatly around a spool underneath the dock, so it takes up very little room and looks nice on the counter. Overall, the kettle is not very large. It's a nice thing, but it's definitely overpriced so only buy it if you wont regret spending the dollars.

The handle is far enough away from the hot metal that even a faint sense of grace is enough to avoid burns. The pour is predictable, steady, and precise to the last drop. The kettle heats a single mug's worth of water in 2 minutes flat (I timed it).

A++ would recommend this product to a friend.

Smells strongly of burning plastic, and when I say "smells strongly" I mean REEKS, to the point where I can even taste it in the water. There's a little plastic piece inside the kettle which I completely removed so as far as I can see the ONLY material in contact with water is stainless steel (even including the lid) but the water still reeks and tastes odd. I also have the non-electric Hario stovetop kettle (that, oddly, says "Made in Japan" as opposed to this Chinese-made electric version) that looks virtually identical to this one that I use at home as opposed to this which I attempted to use for pour-over coffee at work (looks the same minus the bottom electric part, obviously) and the stovetop version 100% does NOT have the burning plastic smell. As in, at all. How is no one commenting on this??? I've had mine for months and had to stop using it, even after dozens of boils it absolutely reeked of burning plastic.

By the way, the description says "Imported from Japan." This is false, for this version, the electric version, the box clearly says "Made in China." Very odd, I can't imagine what they're putting into this thing in China to get it to smell like it does and actually affect the taste of the water (especially considering the only thing contacting the water is metal?).

I got this after using the standard (non-electric) Hario Buono kettle for some time. I loved that model but the electric one hat noticeably less capacity. .8 liter instead of 1.0 liter. This makes a difference when you want to heat water for two 16 oz travel mugs. With the electric model you come up about 6 oz. short.

The other thing a little disappointing was the length of time it takes to boil a full pot of water. I was under the impression, from other electric kettles I have used, that they are always faster than boiling on a stovetop. That is not the case with this one. It takes just as long if not a little longer. Boiling a filled pot took 6 1/2 minutes.

I agree with another reviewer that the light placement was a poor design. It could have been placed just beneath the handle so no matter which way you set the pot you can see it. I'm left-handed too, but if not for the first two complaints, I could have lived with it. Instead I chose to return it after about 3 weeks. The smaller capacity was the real deal-breaker.

The other trivial thing maybe worth noting is that the lids between the electric and standard versions are not interchangeable. The electric one is smaller, for what it's worth.

This pot really is the gold standard for making pour over coffee. It's got one big deficit, however. The heating element gives off an odor similar to burning plastic. I don't think anything is actually burning and the coffee tastes fine but this odor is unpleasant. Also, it should be a litre in size.

I have a non-heated version of this kettle for home use (this was for my office). This very heats water to boiling very quickly.

The spout design ensures precise control over the flow.

I don't get a plastic taste mentioned in other reviews.

Just arrived, and is immediately being returned. This product represents itself as being made in Japan, and apparently the manufacturer has sadly begun having it made in China. I specifically wanted a product that was not made in China due to the recent history the past few years of substandard workmanship and materials. I want to ensure that any food-related products, especially, are safe.

I have had this kettle for less than a year and it leaks out of the base near the power switch now. As much as I enjoy mixing electricity and water I cannot use this any longer. For the cost of this kettle I expected far more durability, I have had lesser store brand kettles last years longer than this.

Spare yourself the additional cost and buy a more affordable unit, while beautiful this does not last.

I have been using one for 3 months in the office. It boils water and gives a precise pour. No funny taste or smell.

I empty it after each use and don't let water sit in it.

So far no issues.

PS: It should cost less!

PSS: A week after writing the above it started to rust on the inner bottom plate. I now give it one star!
