For the better part of 2012 and 2013, I was partially responsible for the care of a sick relative. I would drive 4+ hours one way to get to her house so that I could relieve her primary caretakers (her mother) so that they could have a break for a weekend or two every month. It was a harrowing two years. I watched a brilliant lawyer and athletic marathon runner waste away from brain cancer. My weekends were spent caring for this person and her two children (who were 4 and 2 by the end). Her husband - God love him, he's a good man - was about as talkative as a stone and almost as cold. I can't blame him considering everything he was going through, but it made for very sad, very cold and lonely weekends.
It was right around the beginning of my many, many road trips that a friend suggested the "Harmontown" podcast and I started listening to it on the long rides to care for her.
It turned into my special preparation and therapeutic come-down for these difficult weekends. It made me laugh and smile in an otherwise very trying time.
Maybe someday Dan, Jeff, Spencer, Erin or any other guest on Harmontown will read this review and know just how very thankful I am for making me laugh and smile and be positive during a time when everything else in life was telling me not to be.
This movie was great. It's great to the outsider who's never listened to the podcast - because you get a special look at this community of outcasts and derelicts and see how one guy, his friends, a lot of comedy and a few games of D&D will bring them together. But really, it's even better for the regular listener of the podcast, someone like me who never made it to the tour and might not ever make it to California (I live in NY) to see the show. It great to see these people in action. Watch their foibles, mistakes, success' (ie: Spencer) and just be able to say, hey! I remember when I heard that on the podcast.
Truly great film. Masterful editing. Very touching. I wish I could hug every member of "Harmontown" and thank them from the bottom of my heart.
Great podcast. Great movie. Listen and watch.
