Once Tom recovers and sees what he's done, he offers to pay for the damage. He's stunned when Lexi informs him the total is almost $5,000! He tells her he doesn't have that kind of money then promises to work it off by taking over the repairs. She agrees even though her brother and best friend strongly object.
Here's where the author lost me. Tom comes back the next day ready to work. He and Lexi have this moment where they are looking at one another then he touches her. The next thing you know he's kissing her, making a move on her. And she lets him. In fact she's a willing participant in what's going on!
Remember when I said Lexi was afraid? How do you go from being afraid of someone one day to making out with them the next? There was no build up of trust, no wariness on her part. It simply didn't make sense for her to get physical with this guy. Yes, she guessed what his problem was but even so, she knew nothing about him and didn't know the extent of his problem. Didn't know if he was going to go off again, if he was violent, or what. I'd expected something more, thought they would get to know one another and Lexi would help him work through some of the trauma. I was extremely disappointed at what happened next. I didn't even finish the book.
Now, it is NOT depressing, it is just life and it gives us a better understanding of the situation. The hero is in his head a lot but it helps to explain what he is feeling and how he views his surroundings and the world. He meets the heroine, Lexi. who owns a Christmas store in a small town. She has issues of her own. She was badly burned as a teen and she is still suffering from that. In a way, they are both suffering from PTSD. she just hides hers better than he does. The author was spot on dealing with a burn victim. Again, we have no idea of what they are going through and how their lives are effected. My brother was burned and when he woke up in the hospital there was a picture at the end of his hospital bed that was of a fire! It nearly drove him crazy. it was glued to the wall and obviously the decorator never dealt with burn patients or the picture would have never been placed there. We did let them know about it!!
There is a very touching love story that is taking place almost from the very first. So, there are issues but the love story carries it through. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I highl6y recommend it. It is thought provoking and hopeful. Don't miss this very good short read. you won't be sorry. I'm not sure why the 1 star reviewer didn't like the heroine. I didn't find anything about her to not like. She was a strong woman, a kind and loving friend and perfectly capable of standing up for herself. She didn't whine or complain about her misfortune or circumstances, to me there just wasn't anything to criticize her about. I liked her and the hero plus the side characters - especially the three-legged dog and the one-eyed cat!!
I was not paid for this review. I am not an author nor do I know one. I am not kin to this writer. I am a reader and this is just my opinion, nothing more, nothing less.
"Finn is suffering from PTSD and the loss of a friend and fellow soldier. Lexi was severely burned in a fire when she was a kid and is still unable to let people see her scars."
It should work right? Two scarred and emotionally flawed people coming together; while helping each other through a very difficult time in their lives, they fall in love. But it didn't, at least not for me. Sorry.....
