Following the sequence of life for Menolly,. a 15 year old girl, raised in a 'seahold' on Pern, was like reliving the trials and problems of teenhood, in a sense. But also on a far away earthlike planet that can be absolutely captivating. She has a special musical ability that most of her family and seafaring tribal society consider unsuited for females who are only to help with fish preservation and raising many children.Music teachers, or harpers, teach children through songs and music and the old man harper has recognised her gift and sent songs she has written and taught her all she knows. However, her father rejects the harper's belief in her. Her singing and playing flute and guitar encourages others but they won't speak up to help her. Through an unfortunate accident while gutting fish, her hand is injured. The old harper dies and a new young man comes and circumstances happen where Menolly is so despairing she runs away out of the safety of the cave system of her home. Will she survive holdless from the falling 'thread'? These three books in this trilogy are inspiring and the ability the author has to get you comepletely involved with most of your senses by her descriptions is why they are my favorite 3 of all the series she has written about Pern. How does this girl stay alive , feed herself and 9 baby firelizards( which her hold had considered an old wives tale) and come to become a true harper herself. This may be fiction but it is worthy of reading over and over( at least I read them once a year at least.)! Pern is quite a planet as is the native fauna and flora. Read and enjoy!

Harper Hall trilogy in the Dragonriders of Pern series

I have previously owned and read this series. My paperback set of these three Harper Hall novels had literally fallen apart. I purchased this hardcover trilogy to replace them. In the background and weaving through the stories of the dragons are the stories of the harpers. Harpers serve an important part in an agricultural society. Through song they record history and even science. Through word, actions, and songs they affect the politics. If you enjoyed this series, you should also look for The Masterharper of Pern book.

I have loved the Dragonriders of Pern since I read the first one from my science fiction book club about 35 years ago. My daughter read them all as she was growing up and eventually purchased her own set. It is getting difficult to find these as publishers stop publishing paper books and older sci fi writers like Anne McCaffrey pass away. I recently had to replace my original hardcover sci fi book club version as it fell apart from how many times it has been read.

These is an excellent series to read as an adult or to a child, or for an older child to read on their own. (The ones written by Ms. McCaffrey's son I would not give to a child under 14.) Anne McCaffrey will be missed and her estate only allows a certain person to write in the world of Pern, so it is unlikely there will be any additional books. I have reread the harper trilogy and all the dragonrider books by Anne at least ten times, and some of the books even more often.

I recently purchased this collection of McCaffery's three books about the Harper Hall: Dragon Song, Dragon Singer, and Dragon Drums. I remember reading them as a young adult and found that they really hold up over all these years. Inspiring and insightful, McCaffery has a real way with dialogue and coming-of-age emotions all set in a backdrop of another planet that humans have colonized in a distant, forgotten past. This set of novels really uses music and love of animals as central themes. McCaffery is quite elegant in her transition of focus from a female protagonist in the first 2 books, to a male in the last, with each serving as major characters in the other's story. It's not just a great read for any age but also a great lesson in storytelling. I lend it to my students all the time and they love it.

The Harper Hall of Pern was the second, and perhaps the most beloved of the original books that introduced me to Anne McCaffrey's world of Pern. This book focuses on the trials and triumphs associated with young people that have a passion for music. One girl grew up in an isolated, pioneer, and misogynistic clan setting where her musical abilities were stifled and unvalued until in desperation she chose to run away and try to live alone. When she accidentally saves some fire lizard eggs, and manages to save and imprint 12 of the surviving hatchlings, Menolly's life changes forever! Ultimately, she is found, and brought to and adopted by the Harper Hall of Pern, where she slowly learns to value both herself and her abilities to bring joy through her music to all of Pern! Piemur, a talented scamp Menolly meets at the Harper Hall, has many (often humorous) misadventures when his voice suddently changes and he has to find a sense of identity that no longer revolves around his singing abilities. My original copy was lost (by my teenage daughter) while on a summer vacation. This book is one of a few to fall in the category of "comfort books" to be read over and over again.

If anyone were to ask "what should I read to get into science fiction and fantasy?"... one of the best answers available is the Dragonriders of Pern series. The Harper Hall of Pern is a trilogy that chronologically belongs between the second and third books of the Dragonriders trilogy. I've read this series before and bought this because it was all three books in a hard-back volume. Excellent purchase, very pleased. Great series. I love how McCaffrey develops the overall theme throughout the series and eventually sews everything together (very neatly I might add). This is top-quality writing, top-quality science-fantasy.
