Harpoon: Inside the Covert War Against Terrorism's Money Masters Hardcover – November 7, 2017

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 282 ratings

A revelatory account of the cloak-and-dagger Israeli campaign to target the finances fueling terror organizations--an effort that became the blueprint for U.S. efforts to combat threats like ISIS and drug cartels.

ISIS boasted $2.4 billion of revenue in 2015, yet for too long the global war on terror overlooked financial warfare as an offensive strategy. "Harpoon," the creation of Mossad legend Meir Dagan, directed spies, soldiers, and attorneys to disrupt and destroy money pipelines and financial institutions that paid for the bloodshed perpetrated by Hamas, Hezbollah, and other groups. Written by an attorney who worked with Harpoon and a bestselling journalist,
Harpoon offers a gripping story of the Israeli-led effort, now joined by the Americans, to choke off the terrorists' oxygen supply, money, via unconventional warfare.

Review

"It's a cliché after Watergate that the key investigation in most circumstances is to 'follow the money' (in the words of Deep Throat). This is the story of how Mossad led this movement and substantially effected investigations of terrorism and similarly important matters and how this influenced the CIA's later work in the same field. Bravo Mossad! Thanks for leading the way."―R. James Woolsey, CIA Director (1993-95)

"The riveting and untold story of the intelligence task force that launched a dynamic new front in the war on terror. A thrill ride with one of the most important Israeli start-ups of them all."―
Tamir Pardo, Director of the Mossad (2011-1016)

"Money drives terrorism. If funding is cut, terrorism is reduced. A groundbreaking look at how spies, soldiers, statesmen, and lawyers waged a relentless campaign to dry up the financial streams that funded terrorism against Israel and the United States. A great read about a compelling issue."―
Professor AlanDershowitz, leading civil rights attorney

"
Harpoon is interesting and insightful. It is a deep dive into the world of espionage and covert operations that takes the reader from the streets of Israel to the finance district of New York City. One of Harpoon's best aspects is giving us a look at the leaders inside the unit. Instead of simply reading about the incidents, we get to feel connected to the men and women who put their lives on the line in the battle against radical Islam."―DailyWire

"
Harpoon reads like a fast-paced thriller novel.... Harpoon superbly outlines how Israel became the preeminent authority in fighting terrorism by attacking its sources of income.... This book must be considered required reading for anyone considering a career in counter-terrorism--or for anyone wanting real insight into how our world works, and what can be done about it."―The American Spectator

"This book is
Start Up Nation all over again, only this time the ingenuity, innovation and flexibility of mind is not about technology but about fighting terror."―Jewish Journal

"Highly revealing.... One of the best books on best practices in countering terrorists."―
Washington Times

"A fascinating read."―
The Tower

"Gripping.... This fascinating book about the intelligence and legal war against terror is a must-read."―
Jewish Press

This book is a phenomenal book written by lawyers who are trying attempting to get justice for terrorist victims. The books story involves the terrorist, Hezbollah and Hamas and the killings of hundreds in Israel. If you wonder why few people back Palestine they need to read the transcripts of trials. The book gives a detail description of the horrors of terrorists. I checked the bibliography to see if trials mentioned actually were in the court in NYC. The documentation and primary sources are exceptional. It reads like a novel until it gets personal. Obama was wrong not to work with theMossd like Bush did after 9/11. What is in the news today is directly a result of past history. A must read for people who want to understand the crisis in the Middle East.

Although the fight against Islamic terrorists must happen on many fronts, the attack on their money movement is critical. The impressive approach of lawyer Nitsana Darshan-Leitner to sue organizations like the PLO, money centers like the Lebanon Canada Bank, and even countries that aid, abed, and fund terrorists has certainly had a huge impact on protecting the world from evil. In her non-fiction book, which sometimes reads like a spy novel, she explains how she has gone after the bad guys, often with the help of intelligence services around the world – especially in Israel – to cripple the infrastructure of groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. One of the side results of her work, unfortunately, has been the extreme tightening of regulations relating to money transfers around the world. With all the added government rules, it’s often hard for good people to move money for legitimate purposes. Much like the TSA pats down millions of innocent people every year in order to protect travelers from a few malicious extremists, the banks must examine every money movement in order to catch the few that will fund terror organizations. As a financial advisor, I spend a great deal of time dealing with these anti-money laundering controls. The terrorists have made their murderous actions extend well beyond the one-time havoc that they caused and literally changed the way we live our lives and handle our money. Darshan-Leitner’s book is a great exposé of the extent of the damage they have caused and of how she has been leading the courtroom fight against them. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to participate in the conversation about how to fight Islamic terror.

There's a new weapon in the war against terrorism, invented by the Israeli Mossad. Find the money and shut down financing to the terrorists who maim/kill innocents who happen to be in Israel. Read about jury verdicts against the PLO and the monetary rewards given to the victims. Seeking and securing justice for outrageous acts of hatred. Justice rules. I have met the author and she is a brilliant, articulate and highly competent lawyer
and activist at the forefront of the world's war against terrorism.

Shalom ~ The details of a war on terrorism by bankrupting the terrorists money laundering schemes could have been bo or ing! It was not in HARPOON. If you are Jewish, you also felt a great sense of pride. HaShem does not always use the mighty many to bring down evil schemes. More often HaShem uses the faithful few to patiently overcome. I appreciated the agency struggles documented in HARPOON. It was instructive to have placed another historical marker that Israelis lead others to follow important paths of the sanctity of life and the rightness of disrupting terrorists bankers. It seems to me that HARPOON should be required reading of every elected official in the world and candidates who seek to be entrusted with the public trust of a nation's wealth. Informed values voters then, having read HARPOON, themselves, should ask pointed policy questions of the wanna-bees and the elected public servants, how will their policy proposals disrupt and destroy the terrorists financial stream.

Well written, reads like a novel. Informative on how the widespread terrorist network is, the existential threat to Israel and the head in the sand the West generally has had to Islam and its goal of world domination. Interesting to read how the Israelis developed a creative, aggressive approach to thwarting terrorist networks by trying to stop the cash flow to PLO and other terror groups.

The fight against terrorism is raged in various fronts.
This book shows how Israelis chose one, which was
not considered then but that proved effective. At the
end, it is all about money that funds terror.
The book also shows how corrupt are the false and corrupt
are indeed the so called freedom fighters the cause is a mere
reason for them liberating their lowest insticts and corruption
in the name of said "noble" cause.

I brought this book initially thinking it sounded interesting, when I received it my outlook had changed and I was somewhat unsure whether I was going to read it after all. I decided to persevere and boy was I glad I did. This book is a boys own adventure from start to finish, It is extremely well written and as a non-fiction book contains lots of relevant information about the dealings of Harpoon. Anyone with even a vague interest in terrorism and how we go about dealing with it would do well to read this book. On the other hand anyone wanting a good read would also have to look a long way for a fiction book to equal this one.
