Harassed by her former owner, living under threat of recapture until the end of the Civil War, Jacobs survived poverty, ran a boarding house, and built a career as a political writer and speaker, struggling all the while to provide for her family. Jean Yellin brings to life the struggles and triumphs of this extraordinary woman whose life reflected all the major changes of the nineteenth century, from slavery to the Civil War to Reconstruction to the origins of the modern Civil Rights movement.

Harriet Jacobs has been rolling in her grave for 150 years. All she ever wanted is for all people to be treated equally in America. Mrs. Jacobs was born and suffered as a slave in the American south. She also wrote "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" which is available free. She spent her entire life after escaping helping freed slaves, women and charity to those in need. Unfortunately, she lived to see the rise of the lynch mobs in the south, segregation in the entire country after the Supreme Court overturned the Civil Rights Act of 1875 which opened the door to discrimination in public places. Her dreams of blacks in America being treated equitably in America after the Civil War vanished before her eyes. Slavery ended but in many ways, things were worse for blacks. The majority of southern states left the union before Lincolns inauguration address. In Lincolns inauguration address (March 4, 1861), he states "I have no purpose to interfere with the institution of slavery in the south where it exists". Lincoln also felt blacks should be removed from America and never offered them citizenship despite "emancipating" them. Speaking of emancipation, it was done more to frame the civil war as a higher cause than stopping a secession and quell British sympathy with the south and possibly joining with the south. He didn't do it until two years after the war and his presidency when things were going terribly for the Union. Not exactly the Lincoln we know and love. We still deal with the consequences today. Also to note is the level of racism in early women's suffragette movements. A very good book, well researched. A depressing chronicle of racism in America and ones woman's fight against it.

I loved this book. It is a personal account by a slave who ran away and was not caught. But she had to live her life in fear. There are very few historical accounts of slave's lives due to obvious reasons. But she was secretly taught to read and wrote a very good account of her life. I could not put it down and would highly recommend this book!

Really good, useful, well researched book on the author of a slavery autobiography that we otherwise wouldn' t know what to make of much of what she wrote. Harriet Jacobs was an extremely exceptional woman. She wrote some things about her master that seem like they have to be fictional until we learn that he was both bipolar and addicted to drugs, which isn't something I learned anywhere else.
