Problem solving has a long heritage at PF Harris. In 1924, two years after its founding, the company tackled the Calvin Coolidge White House, which had been overrun for years by roaches and water bugs. Harris’s product was so successful in eliminating the scourge that he was described on the front page of the Washington Times as a "vermin slayer" who has just fought a decisive, winning battle with a horde of cockroaches which infested the lower regions of the Executive Mansion.
Over the course of the next few months Harris took “his final feast” to dozens of government buildings, including the Senate Office Building, the Department of Justice, the Supreme Court and Walter Reed Hospital. Success followed success: Each superintendent of the various buildings was highly satisfied with the results.
The company today stays nimble enough to respond to changing market demands, leading the way in the development of numerous products, including natural insect repellents like Swamp Gator and Swamp Gnat which repel biting insects without using deet. Beyond the products it sells, Harris helps customers find easy and economical solutions to pest problems through helpful labeling, instructive videos and personal advice.
It’s a brand with a reliable past and an innovative future. PF Harris is America’s oldest EPA-registered company. With more than 55 products, the company provides solutions to treat everything from roaches and bed bugs to scorpions and stink bugs.
Identify, Eliminate & Prevent
Bed Bugs are tan to brown blood sucking parasites up to 5mm long (roughly the size of an apple seed) with a flat, oval shaped body. Bed Bugs are often confused with the following insects:
- Carpet Beetle
Signs of Activity
Many people believe that bed bugs are too small to be seen. This isn’t true. While Bed Bugs are usually found in the bed, they can navigate around the bedroom and even into the living room. Bed bugs spend the day in harborages close to a bed, couch or chair that people sit in for long periods. They come out at night and crawl to a bed or chair to get a blood meal.
To check your bed for activity, look along the underside of the seams of the mattress. In most cases, if you have bed bugs you will notice dark colored fecal matter in this area.
Next, check the cracks of the headboard and bed frame. Bed bugs, if squished, will leave a dark red stain behind. In cases of heavy infestation, the blood sucking parasites may be found all around the room most commonly in the following places:
- Folds of curtains
- Seams of chairs and couches
- Behind wall hangings
- Edges of electrical outlets and window frames
Bed bugs usually feed between at night while we are asleep. They can feed up to 10 minutes before returning to a hiding area to digest the meal. After feeding, bed bugs may be dormant for 5 to 7 days while they digest the blood meal.
Although the bite may not be immediately felt, people often react to the proteins of the bed bug saliva introduced during biting. Usually, a reddish spot may develop, associated with some swelling and itching. There may be little response immediately following the bite, with peak itchiness being noticed one to two days later. Repeated exposure to bed bug bites may produce more intensive reactions and itchiness. However, these reactions are highly variable and some people may show absolutely no signs of being bitten while others react strongly. Fortunately, testing has determined that bed bugs are incapable of transmitting human pathogens.
- Wash and dry bed linens and furniture covers at high temperatures. Minimum drying time: 20 minutes.
- Disassemble bed. Thoroughly vacuum all six sides of box springs, mattress and bed components. Vacuum furniture, carpets and floors.
- Shake container prior to spraying mattress, box springs, bed components, flooring and baseboards. Allow to dry completely.
- Enclose mattress and box springs in encasements to prevent bed bug entry and exit. Do not remove encasements.
- Apply powder into cracks and crevices in furniture and rooms
Most insecticides used for bed bug control are primarily of the pyrethroid class of pesticides, like Harris Bed Bug Killer. Elimination of bed bugs in a home involves use of effective insecticides applied to all points where bed bugs are present. Our water-based, odorless treatments must directly contact the bed bugs during application. Repeated insecticide applications within 4 weeks may be required to kill bed bugs that later hatch from eggs, along with those that may have been missed during earlier treatment.Vacuuming
Thoroughly vacuum all 6 sides of box springs and mattresses. Vacuum all cracks and crevices within the furniture of the bed and nearby electrical outlets, baseboards and floors prior to treatment. Empty the vacuum contents into a plastic bag and discard in trash.Handling Bedding
Sheets and other bedding can be easily disinfected by laundering that involves a dryer cycle. The high temperatures involved in drying are critical to successfully kill bed bugs, with exposure to temperatures exceeding 120º F for 20 minutes usually sufficient to kill all life stages.
When stripping beds during a bed bug treatment, pull the sheets carefully so as not to dislodge eggs or drop bed bugs onto the floor where they may be missed by other treatments. Accidental spread of bed bugs can also be prevented by bagging the bedding as it is moved to the laundry.Mattress / Boxspring Encasements
Mattress encasements enclose your mattress and box spring and are an integral step in the treatment process for two reasons: Firs, they protect your investment in bedding. Second, they reduce the areas where bed bugs can hide nearest to you. Water-resistant, tight-weave fabric prevents the entry of even the smallest bed bug.Disposal of Infested Items
Disposal may be considered for mattresses, box springs, couches or other furniture that is heavily infested with bed bugs. If this is done, proper disposal should be ensured. Leaving such items on the street for disposal may cause them to be scavenged, which will spread infestations to new dwellings. Be careful when removing the items from the structure so that bed bugs will not become dislodged and infest other areas inside.

If you aren't 100% sure you have Bed Bugs, attached to my review i have images of blood stains on my sheets (with a size comparison, size 7 ring) and their fecal stains at the corner of my box springs. Classic signs, even if you haven't seen them physically. I also have a size comparison of the actual item and my 16oz spray bottle just in any case :3.
First day i received it, i came into my room and saw a bug on the wall. My first sighting. With one single spray the bug halted in its tracks and curled up. I left it on the wall for 30 mins or so to make sure it was dead...and it was! Already this has my 5 stars. I ordered a box springs case and today am getting serious and cleaning out my entire room. I would recommend if you have a dresser close to your bed, to take the drawers out and dry ALL your clothes in the dryer on high 70 mins per drawer of clothes, and use the spray to get every crack of the dresser. Dont just focus around your bed as they travel! Also, vacuum!!!!! vacuum your whole floor and move everything!!!! since the first night i sprayed (doing this dresser cleaning was the second day i had it) i already see dead shells on the ground under my bed and am only getting bit once or twice a night.
It was Traumatizing. I spent the entire day after the first seriously cleaning and spraying everything in my room (minus the dresser since i got it the day before though i did vacuum under it) The hardest part...was lifting up my box springs and seeing all the eggs and bugs underneath, just clinging to the mattress in their little nests. I know its difficult to face but it must be done! Personally, I cried. it was so disgusting. Harris is a God send. Literally, with a single spray they Die, the eggs actually burst. Make sure to spray your bed frame too as I saw some dead bugs and one live one there too (fleeing most likely) . After all that, I put on the box springs cover (Utopia Bedding Premium BB proof encasement, good and inexpensive!), vacuumed again, cleaned my sheets, and..... I am happy to report, while I didn't sleep well because of BB nightmares, I did wake up COMPLETELY BITE FREE. with no blood stains on my sheets. I plan on spraying and vacuuming once again in about 10 days but after that 10 days I will edit this with my final results!
UPDATE: it's been longer than 10 days since my initial review, but things have happened since then that I feel I should add. My infested friend brought her cat over once (long story) who slept on my mom's bed one afternoon and gave her the little demons as well. Got out my harris, sprayed the infected area (they where all on the head of her mattress against the wall small nest, caught them early), and literally after I sprayed them they stopped moving. I checked it again about 3 days later when my Utopia mattress cover came in for her, and every single bug was dead, hadn't even moved since the initial spraying.
ALlso, my bed personally has never again been hit or been seen by another bed bug. I know this may seem expensive to some, it was for me at the time, but I promise you, this works! It kills eggs, babies, aduts, and actively keeps bugs away from sprayed areas!
For your complete arsenal, I would reccomend,
The gallon Harris BB Killer
Utopia Bedding, bed covers (all sizes work for mattresses and box springs alike)
Cimexa insecticide dust (sprinkle this along base boards and on or around bed legs) this will kill any bugs that in the future might try and make it to your bed.
I can now say I feel 100% worry free about future possible infestations and I no longer feel helpless against them! I can sleep again without worrying. Though I still have nightmares about them, I know they are just dreams, and Harrison has my back.
If you are going through this, please know you are not being punished by God, Karma is not out to get you, and you are not filthy! My mom and me clean our home every sunday after church, and are very tidy. These things just happen! you will get through this if you are willing to fight! (and, If you are religious) God is with you every step of the way, don't lose hope <3
A month later we noticed a bug in the bathroom. I figured it was migrating from the living room to my bedroom. I never saw any infestation in the bedroom only an occasional one on the wall. After inspecting the couch and a recliner I saw more. Out of sheer disgust I got rid of the couch, love seat, recliner, 2 end tables and bookcases. I then tore out the wall to wall and realized due to the thickness of the carpet and padding they had survived the initial heat treatment. The carpet had been there since the early 80's.
I would see them on the wall of the living room and during the night catch them migrating down the hallway towards the bedroom. I saw many in the bathroom which is before the bedroom.
I started with the Ortho bedbug spray in the living room along the baseboard but still saw them climbing up the walls afterward. I would literally drench the corners and edges of the floors and ceilings with this stuff but still see them at night. I was getting up every night between 3 and 4 am to check and usually find a few on the walls, ceiling and around the door frames in the hallway.
I started buying the regular Harris bed bug spray in the yellow bottle and had limited success with that but it wasn't until I bought the Pyrethroid Resistant Bed Bug spray that I saw results fast!
I've had bottles delivered with and without the sprayer so I use an old bottle of the yellow Harris spray, fill that up and use it to spray. I sprayed every night in the living room, hallway and around the door frames of the closets and bathroom. As I write this I haven't seen one in weeks and of the last ones I saw, some were dead. I'm now spraying every 4 or 5 days and will continue to as a precaution as I understand they can live for months.
Bed bugs are a traumatizing thing and if you've ever dealt with them, it's not something you get over quickly. This product has been a savior and I can't imagine what I would have done without it.
