Great read!

I haven't reached the end of the book, yet as it is a very long book but I can say, being from Independence, MO, I have learned so much political history about the area.

I am somewhat prejudiced as I had met Mr. Truman in his declining years and had great respect for the man personally and politically.

It was common knowledge that if you saw him out for his morning walk, you could approach and speak to him, he was a very nice fellow.

But I digress, the review is about Harry Truman, the book by his daughter, Margaret. She has a very capable writing style that doesn't wear you out trying to understand what she is saying. The flow is easy to follow and it is a biography about her father. If you want a really great story about the history of one of our more popular presidents, this book is for you.

Wish we had a Mr. Truman around today.

Great bio, from a biased writer

I've always admired Harry Truman; after reading this bio, I have a better understanding as to why. As a presidential history buff, I found much of the book really interesting. Lovingly written by Truman's daughter, you can't possibly expect a great deal of objectivity. But you do get a real sense of the heart of this unlikely American hero. Margaret Truman was a talented writer, and that comes through in the book. Two criticisms: she was unfairly derogatory about everyone who was a Republican in those days (wonder what she would think of the party now?) and she was particularly unkind in her accounts of Dwight Eisenhower. Other than that, excellent biography of a remarkable man.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is well-written, informative, and entertaining. There are references to events in "Bess" but from a slightly different perspective and her grasp of the political process is very good. I am now convinced that Harry was one of our best presidents and played a crucial role in the post-WWII international politics. In fact, if the current Democratic party still reflected Harry's ideals, I would change my voter registration.
She also provides first-hand insights and observations about the social life of Washington, which is more interesting than you would think. I highly recommend this book.

Great Truman Biography!

I'm not finished with it yet, but I really like what I've read so far. Yes, the account is biased because it's President Truman's daughter, but the things she says about her father don't seem out of line with what we already know about him. It's well-written, it's engaging. There is a LOT of detail in some sections which make it a bit of a slow mover in some places. I haven't yet gotten to the Manhattan Project years. I imagine that'll be a serious page turner. :)

I was twenty something when Truman suddenly became president. I didn't know woo much about him although I had seen him. This book filled in all about his political years. It was fascinating. I do wish that Margaret had continued it as thoroughly in Harry's post presidential years. It is a good book and I think it covers the field quite well. For those of us who only knew him as a name, read the book. You will come away with a very positive impression of him.

The only fallacy I could find was his faith that sooner or later Russia would start honoring its agreements. We know how that turned out.

I found several quotes that are just as important today in what we believe is a political free-for-all as they did back then:

“I have been all over these United States from one end to another, and when I started out the song was - Well, you can’t win, the Democrats can’t win. Ninety percent of the press is against us, but that didn’t discourage me one little bit. You know, I had four campaigns here in the great state of Missouri, and I never had a metropolitan paper for me the whole time. And I licked them every time! People are waking up to the fact that this is their government, and that they can control their government if they get out and vote on election day. That is all they need to do. . . . People are waking up, that the tide is beginning to roll, and I am here to tell you that if you do your duty as citizens of the greatest Republic the sun has ever shone on, we will have a government that will be for your interests, that will be for peace in the world, and for the welfare of all the people, and not just a few.”
“I don’t go that far, but I sometimes think that if Congressmen talked less and worked more for the public interest they would come out much better and so would the country.”
“We must not fall victim to the insidious propaganda that peace can be obtained solely by wanting peace. This theory is advanced in the hope that it will deceive our people and that we will then permit our strength to dwindle because of the false belief that all is well in the world.”
“Communism is based on the belief that man is so weak and inadequate that he is unable to govern himself, and therefore requires the rule of strong masters. Democracy is based on the conviction that man has the moral and intellectual capacity, as well as the inalienable right, to govern himself with reason and justice.”
“Held Cabinet meeting - explained to Cabinet members that in my opinion the Cabinet members were simply a Board of Directors appointed by the President, to help him carry out the policies of the government; in many instances the Cabinet could be of tremendous help to the President by offering advice whether he liked it or not. But when President made an order they should carry it out. I told them I expected to have a Cabinet I could depend on and take in my confidence and if this confidence was not well placed I would get a Cabinet in which I could place confidence.”
Little disappointed shed didn’t spend a some more time talking about the Berlin Airlift. This was a watermark point in the Cold War.

If you want a good look at Harry, well worth the time.

Watching him navigate the difficult years of his presidency takes you back in time to remind all of us that things have never been easy, He was ridiculed in his time, yet now his time in office can be appreciated more and more. His daughter does a rare job of documenting both his public and private life in a way few authors can. I have enjoyed the book very much and am still savoring each chapter.
