I don't think my simple praise of this novel could ever do it justice. Harsh Prey is written so beautifully and passionately that it captivates the characters to make them dynamic, interesting, and complex. Harry, the charismatic protagonist, makes me want to read much more of his journey as a private eye. I really can't wait for Volume 2 to be released! For now, I will reread it a few times and perhaps try to pace myself, because in the first read through, it only took me two sittings to complete! I love everything about this stunning novel and would recommend it to anyone who has a taste for fantastic storytelling.
From the Author
This is the first story I ever wrote about husband and wife detective team Harry and Dee Shalan. It's all about how Harry and Dee finally decide to actually be a romantic private eye duo. Up until the beginning of this story, Dee had been on the sidelines, playing the role of worrying wife waiting to hear if her husband has taken a bullet and isn't coming home. But in this story, she decides she isn't playing that role anymore.
There are lots of author stories out there of how many years it took to go from inception to final product, and of all of those stories, this is definitely one of them. Harry Shalan, or at least a primitive, malformed version of him, was born in the early 1980s in my college creative writing class. In those days, he was a bumbling cross between Mike Hammer and Inspector Clouseau. But the character morphed over the next several years into the iteration you'll find in this book. He's tough, smart, humble, and sees himself as a modern day knight galloping to the rescue of the downtrodden.
But more than any of those things, he is a man desperately in love with his wife, Dee, who is equally in love with him. They may not always agree on everything, but they definitely agree that neither is complete without the other.
