The 22" Deluxe Belting Leather replaced my traditional black nylon carry-on which I had used for more than 10 year with zero problems or repairs. I bouhg the 22" Deluxe Belting Leather carryone in November 2013. In May, the suit/garment zip cover broke. Last week - Sept, 2014 - the handle used to pull the carry-on broke and will no longer pull out of the suitcase once it has been pushed in.
I haven't started the repair/return process but I can safely say if Hartmann does not do the right thing and replace the suitcase that I will switch to Tumi or another brand.
Sadly, when Samsonite bought Hartmann they closed the Lebanon facility and moved manufacturing to China. Every replacement part I've gotten since then hasn't lasted more than a year, and now they won't even provide parts for my $1,000 bag. The last extension pull handle I got sheared through one rod, clearly a material defect, after 9 months of use. And there's no longer a replacement. The parts are so bad it makes one concerned about the new suitcases, which don't match the quality of the old ones in stitching and fit quality.
When this bag dies I will, sadly, move on to another, more reliable bag. Something that approximates what Hartmann used to be.
I travel a lot (about 150 flights/year). Since then, I've had a countless string of generic-looking bags with broken wheels, zippers, and handles. Every time I would pick one up, it was a reminder of how I was cutting corners. Cheap luggage isn't worth what it costs to a frequent flier.
This Hartmann bag is remarkable. Its wheels, handles, and zippers have never stuck, and it has all the extra features (pockets, hooks, separate suit compartment, toothbrush kit, laundry bag, and so forth) that are more valuable than I would have initially imagined. On top of this Gold Medal functionality, it looks really sharp. Every time I pick it up or even see it -- whether taking it from an overhead storage bin, zipping it open in a hotel, or sliding it back in my closet at home -- it makes me smile.
As for it being lost or ripped off as my fellow DC traveler had warned, knock on wood. I've had over 500 trips with an incredible previously purchased Hartmann Briefcase with no rip-offs yet. With this piece, Hartmann's Global Recovery System should help me reconnect with this newer bag if the unexpected happens. Yet even it vanishes, it will have been worth it while it lasted. I'll order another within a week. [Fellow travelers have told me the tweed is a great deal too. It covers up dirt and costs less.]
Hartmann does have a warranty that is unclear whether items will be fixed for free or "at reasonable costs". Regardless, it requires proof of purchase, which I don't have since I didn't buy it, and perhaps registration. But beyond that is that they want 4-6 weeks processing time. Road warriors are the ones that might buy this product and can't be without it for 4 to 6 weeks. Thank you but no thank you. I am I didn't pay nearly thousand dollars for this bag.
