Matthew Yoder moves from Pennsylvania to Missouri in a swap of men to introduce new men into the community. He stays with a family who's daughter, Shanna left into the English world to pursue a nursing degree and career but returns home for the summer. Her father is stubborn and harsh and has doubts that Shanna will stay. Matthew works hard to give Shanna a reason to stay but she's worked too hard for her dream to just walk away and stay. She decides after an emergency she couldn't possibly stay and while trying to run away runs into Matthew and the bishop and is forced to make a decision between her two worlds that she thought she already made.
Normally, the bishops in the Amish books don't understand, won't tolerate, and are unmoving ,everything is either black or white. This bishop gave options and at first was the typical bishop I'm used to in these stories but he showed he was human which allowed Shanna to grow in her faith whether she stayed or left the community.
I really loved this book! Shanna's feelings towards her family, Matthew and even her Amish faith will draw you in! I could not put this book down!
I was provided with a copy of this book for my review, but was not required to give a positive review.
Shanna and her father seemed to always lock horns as they are both stubborn and have a bit more pride than either one of them should have and unfortunately, that and the fact that Shanna felt drawn to helping others led her to the leave and enter nursing which she feels strongly is a gift that she has. Her father felt so betrayed, when she left, however, her mother did keep in touch with her and let her know she would always be welcome. Shanna ended up needing a place to go during the summer and where else does one normally turn but to home, so she comes home not sure what type of a welcome she will receive from her father.
Matthew, who is part of the swap of Amish men between the Amish communities trying to introduce new blood into each of the communities has come to live with Shanna's family and help her father and brother with the furniture business.
Many things come into play including of course, Matthew and Shanna being drawn to each other ... but what a huge obstacle Shanna has left behind her Amish roots and Matthew has been baptized. Of course, there is a lot more to this story... this is just one obstacle ... but it is a huge one .. and with Shanna's stubborness in the mix ... it could be one that can not be worked out.
Read this delightful book and find out the twists and turns. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did ... and now on to the 3rd book in this enchanting series.
Matthew Yoder was one of the young Amish men from Lancaster, PA that was glad to participate in the swap of young men to Seymour, MO. We met Matthew in book one, Patchwork of Dreams, when he joined his best friend, Jacob Miller, in Seymour. Matthew is residing with Levi Stoltzfus family and working in their furniture business. Matthew is happy with his work and the community.
Matthew found Shanna Stoltzfus, the Stoltzfus' prodigal daughter, slumped over her steering wheel. Shanna was awe strucked with Matthew. Shanna did not want to be home for the summer but had not been able to join fellow students on a mission trip to Mexico. Shanna had left her Amish community to pursue her nursing degree after being told by the bishop she had a gift when she assisted in a crisis that saved a mother's life and her newborn baby.
Matthew and Shanna's characteristics are opposite. Matthew had faith, hardworking, sought the good in others and patience of Job. Shanna was impulsive, prideful, didn’t listen to reason, and had strayed from her relationship with God. Shanna butted head with her father often and felt that's how God viewed her also.Read more ›

Nice young people with mild dialogue. I don't often read these so seemed simplistic. Maybe it's for preteens. That's it!Published on May 20, 2014 by Philip Bergstresser
