Samuel Shanklin is a man who seemed to hate his life. He even felt unhappy around his wife, Sarah. Except for his son Harry, whom he adored. He hated the rest.
Along with his criminal colleague Randall; with whom he regularly worked, he held up the rich for plunder on the King's highways. On some occasions they were joined by a man called Bob Creech who was deadly with a knife. Especially when throwing it. Shankling didn't trust Creech at all and wasn't particularly happy to work with him, but needs must.
When holding up a coach together, (the last time Shanklin intends to do so, as he wants to retire) the three men make themselves busy removing the wealth of a rich lady and her companion. However, Shanklin falls under the Lady's spell when he sees her exquisite face, only taking a necklace from her, despite the fact that she is bedecked with jewels. He doesn't know why he does it, but he lets her and her companion go and goes on his way in possession of the necklace. But, at a later date, when he takes it for valuing to a jeweler, the man tells him that the 'precious stone' in the middle of it, is in fact a tooth!
Shanklin wants to return it to the lady but cant think how without giving himself. As he thinks of her he becomes more and more obsessed with her. To the antagonism of his wife and collegues. They cannot understand what has gotten into him.
I loved this story. It had so much going on at the same time, which made things really interesting and kept my attention. The characters were fully realised and full of life. I love the whole concept of the highwayman, the idea lends itself well to a story.
This was a very entertaining story with complex characters and the wonderful backdrop of old London back in the late 1650's to the early 1800's. I love the drama of London during those times. Occassional civil unrest. The division beyween the 'haves' and the 'have nots' was vast.
People lived by their wits in a hard, uncaring and rough world. Crime was rife and highwaymen were common, and hanged quite often too.
I think that the author has captured the flavour of this time in the past quite well, and I look forward to reading more in this series.
The plot is marvellous constructed, and if you get how the two plot-lines would merge before the end, you're way smarter than me. It came as a complete surprise, and yet, it makes perfect sense, that's how well it has been done.
A suspenseful ride with interesting characters and very well written this is a book that will not let you down. Truly fantastic.
I got an ARC for this book, and you can't imagine how happy I am for that. This is a voluntary review, done by sheer giddiness at such a wonderful read.
A Harvest of Souls by C.C. Edmonston not only stands, but delivers on so many levels.
The author takes the reader on a journey back to England in the 1700’s - I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy and I was transported back to the 1700’s, along the forested lanes, the claustrophobic inns and taverns frequented by the dregs of society and a certain notorious highwayman. He has thoroughly researched his subject and it shows in the writing along with his own inimitable style.
I can see this being turned into a drama or film, so have a read if you know what’s good for you. ⚔️
he is one step away from the noose and one last job will put him on a slippery slope with the woman he loves. she has visions and her dying mother tries to make her embrace it. will everything work out? what is really going on? a great read which i couldnt put down
