Relaxing AND Exciting

Relaxing AND Exciting
I'm really loving this game, and I was afraid I wouldn't because JRPGS are as hit or miss for me as farming/life sims. And this game is both of those things blended together. But all the elements work well and are fun without being overly complicated. While not cutting edge, the graphics, art style and world are utterly beautiful to immerse in and explore, and the music is among some of the best game music ever, fully scored, sumptuous, beautiful... right down to a soothing classical guitar piece that plays during the evening.I was initially put off by the relatively fast pace of each day (about 18 minutes long) and trying to fit in all I want to do each day, but it actually is long enough for a varied set of experiences each day and brings just enough urgency to what would probably otherwise meander. The story so far is a little superficial yet still engaging. The "amnesia thing" JRPGS are famous for is here, and it's fine.... but there's also another character that's confused as to how they came to this world, though we do learn quickly she's a time traveler from the future. Dialogue varies from serious to utterly hilarious (an early conversation with a pompous unicorn had me rolling.) There's no voice acting though, and it would have been nice to have had it. Still, as a Zelda fan, I have long been used to big immersive epics with just text dialogue.I might as well mention (a lot of discussion about it on Reddit) that some players are bothered you can select "male, female or non- binary" but regardless the character is still the same feminine-presenting or female-looking character, it just changes the pronouns game characters refer to you with. I thought it was cool and different and don't mind playing as a feminine character, but if someone is super angry/political or bigoted around gender diversity and presentation... it's worth knowing about up front. And now I'm going to go play Harvestella some more, a world and soundtrack so beautiful that my wife likes to hang out and watch while I play... the first game like that for her since Zelda: Breath of the Wild. If you like Animal Crossing, Zelda, Stardew Valley, JRPGS, or Squaresoft in general, pick this one up. It's unique and a real gem.

I was excited for this game from the time I first found out about it. Closer to/after release I saw a good bit of negative feedback and was worried it wouldn’t be as enjoyable as I had hoped. For this reason, I felt compelled to leave a review because I absolutely love the game and I have completed the game outside of finishing up some optional content. Some aspects that others mention can be pros or cons depending how you look at it.
First, as I personally had hoped when I first saw this one, this game is very story focused and farming is additional icing on the cake. It takes a bit of a back burner but it is still necessary. There are things implemented that making the more tedious aspects of farming sims less so. Personally this makes it more enjoyable for me.
Secondly, there are character/party member quests that help flesh out important people but you don’t have to do the whole run around and talk to 20 people every single day to increase your bond. These quests aren’t super long and there is an incentive for completing them. Again personally I find this a pro, others may not.
A third thing I would like to mention is that this is one of the few games I have actually completed every single side quest and actually enjoyed their content instead of skipping through and moving on to kill 20 of these or harvest 10 of that etc.
Graphics wise, I wasn’t bothered here either though I have seen it listed as a con. No it’s not super amazing graphics, but none in this genre are so I don’t quite get this complaint. I enjoyed the art style and adored the different environments.
I do wish that there was a bit more to do after completion and/or some dlc but this is a first step into this genre for them. Usually when I finish a game I am kind of over it and ready for it to be done even if it was a decent game. This one I simultaneously wanted to rush through for the story but also didn’t want to get to the end and be done. I don’t get some of the hate on the story I have seen as well. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it just kept getting better and better to me.
Some of the other things I have seen hated on are implemented in big names of the genre. Some of these were the few negative things for me but like I said typical of the genre. I got fed up paying the dr if I died or passed out pushing the clock. And it was annoying to be close to reaching the story point/save point but having to warp home to not pass out. But these were minor nuisances and not a huge issues. They have it set up relatively well not be messed up too much by these mechanics.
Overall I found this to be a pretty awesome game and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I truly don’t understand some of the hate it’s received. That’s all I can think of right now and it’s already a long review so I’ll end here and edit if anything else comes to mind!

I'm a sucker for the Harvest Moon/Story of Seasons/Rune Factory games but I'm also a fan of the Final Fantasy series, meaning that I'm familiar with Square Enix. Seeing that Square Enix came out with a farming sim game of its own, I decided to give Harvestella the ol' college try.

As it turns out: I loved it. It has the mindless yet very fun, relaxing and addictive farming tasks that you've come to expect in a farming sim but it also has a very in-depth storyline with some surprising twists that you'd come to expect out of a Final Fantasy game. It also has the romance element that you've come to expect in all the farming sim franchises I've mentioned but it also has plenty of focus on dungeon exploration and combat. Basically, there's a little something for everyone here.

To my knowledge, this is Square Enix's first foray into the world of farming sims and, in my opinion, they knocked it out of the park. I'd say that this is definitely a game worth giving a try if you're a fan of farming sims and RPG's.

This is a fantastic game in the vein of Rune Factory more than Harvest Moon, to give a better idea of what the game play is like. Square Enix knocked it out of the park in my opinion and I sincerely hope they make a sequel for it at some point. A good balance between combat and farming life sim elements, with fun characters that I grew fond of. The story swings hard despite some repetitive side quests, and it punched above what it really had any right to and got my emotions a few times. And it being Square Enix, the music is some of the best in the farm sim/light combat genre in my opinion, good enough that I sincerely hope they release it in the West.

If you enjoy Rune Factory, this game is an absolute must! Harvest Moon fans or RPG fans looking for a change of pace should find something to enjoy here too! As a slow-playing completionist, I got about 60 hours out of enjoyment, so I’d expect most people to get at least 20-30 hours out of it at minimum. Worth every cent, I only wish I could play it for the first time again.

Harvestella is a game that playing feels like stepping into another world. The colorful and charming characters grow on you as you progress their personal stories in subquests, and the main mechanic of farming is actually very streamlined and intuitive. What sets this game apart from the usual farming sim is the addition of action RPG combat and dungeons, as well as a lovingly written story that has quite a few twists and turns that make it a genuinely fascinating plot. The massive number of optional side quests are always accompanied by smaller character stories separate from the main narrative, and some of them are so well written they can tug at your heartstrings. The tone of the game is hopeful but still somewhat melancholic as it deals with subjects like loss and separation, love, and having to move on. It's all complemented by a fantastic musical score and gorgeous world design. You can take your time and farm for as long as you want before continuing the main plot, so you are never forced to lose the peaceful and calming mood of living how you want to day by day in the game. If you want to play a game that is cute, charming, relaxing but still maintains the thrills of a good JRPG story, Harvestella can't be beat.

So much fun to play and there's never a shortage of things to do. The main story is nice and long and there's plenty of side quests to keep you busy for hours. The soundtrack and graphics are also so beautiful!
